I think so, anyway. It's one of the best I've seen, only behind Pulp Fiction and Die Hard. Die Hard 2 is somewhere near the top of that list two, but maybe just below this one. It totally blew me away.
I can't believe how badly this was received!

Are you serious?. This is not only one of willis's worst movies but one of the worst movies ever. And die hard 2 wasn't very good either. Die with a vengeance is better than die hard 2. The first die hard is probably one of the best action movies of all time though

Are YOU serious? I think you have not been paying attention to Willis' career, because the dude made a lot of turds and this one is CERTAINLY NOT among them:
The Last Boyscout, Hudson Hawk, Color of Night, Last Man Standing, The Jackal, Mercury Rising, The Siege, Bandits, Hart's War, 16 blocks, Perfect Stranger, Surrogates, Cop Out, The Expendables, Red 1+2, The Cold Light of Day, Live Free or Die Hard, A Good Day to Die Hard, GI Joe, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Grindhouse: Planet Terror.
ALL of those movies are WAY WORSE than Hostage.
And that's without even mentioning questionable movies such as Looper, Armageddon, Lucky Number Slevin, Ocean's Twelve and Unbreakable, which weren't as bad as the rest above in my book, just meh. Ok Ocean's Twelve was bad.
So i'm sorry, but Hostage is definitively in his top 10%.

I kind of agreed with you until you said Lucky Number Slevin was "questionable". That film is brilliant! Yes, the title could have been better, but the film its self is one of the best of the 00's. Well written, brilliantly acted, stylish as hell and probably contains one of the best twists I'd seen in a film since The Sixth Sense... back on point though, Willis has definitely made some *beep* in his time, Slevin or Hostage are not at the top of that list, not IMO anyways.
Finally somebody said it! I'm appalled every time i see the score and critics for this movie, for me, this is indeed one of Willis' best movie ever!
There's only 2 movies i prefer with him: Pulp Fiction (obviously) and 6th Sense. And maybe the first Die Hard too. Ok there's Sin City too, forgot about this one.
Except from those mentioned above, Hostage is one of the best action/thriller i've ever seen with Willis or without.
The cinematography alone makes this movie top-tier in my book... The fire scene... just wooow!
The last scene in the bar was also BADA$$!
Not to mention, i showed and recommended this movie to a lot of friends and all of them came back saying "How in hell have i never heard of this one??"
Totally agree with you OP!

YES! I forgot about Sin City! That's another good one and definitely among his best. Also a huge fan of Frank Miller.
I agree, this is definitely one of the better thrillers. Unlike so many others lauded by critics, this one actually had me on the edge of my seat. It was done so well in the suspense department, even with its somewhat outlandish moments and a few questionable turns here and there. But all in all, it was a fantastic ride.
Glad someone agrees. :) This movie is definitely underrated.

There are many "wanna be" film-makers who will trash many many movies like they can make a far better movie. It's cheap to criticize, right? :)
For me, Hostage is quite good and entertaining. It's humanly impossible to expect 7 Die Hard-quality movies in every 10 movies made. So, let's chill out, and enjoy the ride :)
I am shocked to see anyone love this movie. It was so poorly done that I didn't even bother to finish it. From Rumer Willis to the horrific acting from the hostage kids, one with the 90's hair, to the plot and everything else this is a real dud. This isn't anywhere remotely close to Pulp Fiction. If this were his first film it would also have been his last.
I agree though that it's not on the same level as Pulp Fiction, but it's still way underrated. In my opinion. I know, your opinion is the opposite. LOL.

It sounds you're the one that's shocked about that. This movie was not only poorly received by critics, but audiences alike. So you liked the movie, great, but don't act like the detractors in the minority.
That's my corn out there! You guys are guests in my corn!
I actually think this is one of Willis' best performances. Although the film is incredibly stylish and OTT, Willis actually gives a persuasive performance as a world-weary, disgraced hostage negotiator. Much as I love Die Hard, McClane is a bit too smarmy and that didn't take tons of acting chops to pull off a character like that. Die Hard 2 is awful, though!
