Jumpy editing?

Just saw this one last night. I was fine with most of the movie, especially Annette Benning, but one thing did really stick out for me: there were a few times where we get one of these absolutely awkward scene transitions, that throws you off for a minute or two. I'm not saying that a film has to be perfect, but this is not a mistake that I notice in many movies, much less more than a few times.

Anyone else catch it?

Didn't really notice any awkward scene transitions. Do you have any examples?

I felt exactly the same way, and even remarked at one time to my friend during the film "What weird editing". One example was when Tom is invited to stay at the house. He arrives, we have a few witty lines at the dinner table that night, and then suddenly they're rowing boats on the river the next day. It felt like a whole lot was left on the cutting room floor.

THANK YOU!!! I thought the same thing! One example...at the end when Anette Bening and Jeremy Irons are hugging after her triumph on stage...I felt like I was watching a rough cut. Overall, I did love the film, though.

Good call.

No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

Now that you mention it....maybe... I have yet to buy my copy...so I will look for it then. I will say I was jumpy and jumping at the end of the film...as I thought this was the best movie I had seen for years.....

i totally agree, the movie was good except for the pacing - which ultimately comes down to bad editing.
we seemed to be hurrying along and then thrown into a totally new setting where we stayed for a matter of seconds then got pulled out of it.
bad editing really irritates and distracts me when watching a film.
there was also one part where julia and the 'young man' were kissing on the river bank and there's a random shot from the water going past them which looked like a POV shot of someone watching them from the river, but turned out just to be a random 'arty' shot that didnt really fit with the moment.
so dodgey editing and out of place cinematography.
i also recall a scene at the dining table where there were about 2 sentences exchanged and that was the scene - it seemed a useless scene that didn't need 2 be there and if i was editing i would have cut it.
