rated R???

hey,

I saw the movie at a press screening two weeks ago, and I just loved it. I also had the luck to make an interview with Mr. Szabó. He was amazing. And I would've asked him, what the thinks about this film being rated R, if I would've been familiar with this matter. In Hungary, the film is rated PG-12 (under twelve requires parent guardian), and I think that's completely alright.
What do you think is the reason for rating this film R?

Simple. USA is controlled by a bunch of insane jesus freaks who believe anything remotely sexual is pure evil. Sex is considered MUCH worse than violence in USA.

Of course Sex is always considered "much worse" than violence by the public because of the embarressment factor when parents watch it with their kids or teens. Therefore,it doesn't mean sex is bad...its just something we feel uncomfortable when we see people having sex on screen because its supposed to be private.

reply

You actually agree that sex--a natural part of everyone's life (hopefully), is worse for children to see than people having their heads blown off?

Wow, I'm glad I don't know *your* kids...what must you be teaching them about values.

SGathan:

Who controls the Motion Picture Ratings in America?

I think you are right with your second statement, as it is a legitimate opinion, but the assumption of insanity and the slander of "jesus-freak" is completely inappropriate.

reply

o well its rated r, so what

you cant do anything about it

reply

This film would have been no more than a PG-13 if they hadn't shown Tom and Avice humping in bed- that's what got the film the restricted rating, not Tom's bare bottom in a previous scene. PG-13 is a hump-free zone.

PS I wouldn't worry about who runs the US. We are in good hands. However, I would worry about the high unemployment rates in many European nations due to high corporate taxes. Boy, talk about repression!

Great to see a silly comment like that from paskunia. Take a long look now at where not only your 'safe hands' have got you but how guilable and stupid you were for thinking so in the first place. Asshat.

Some corrections:
1. USA is *currently* ruled
2. by a bunch of insane *Jesus or other Monotheistic dictator-type figurehead* freaks
3. who believe that anything remotely *different from their views, especially when it comes to sexuality* is pure evil
4. *unless it profits them directly, in which case it has to be [also] exploited.*
5. Sex *(unless it is for procreation purposes only and is not enjoyed as to become "addictive")* is considered MUCH worse than violence in the USA *because the pseudo-philosophy of dispensationalism teaches them that the End of Days is near and that the increase of violence is to be expected, is natural and is a welcome sign of the End being near."*

Well, that's better.

The sad example of 'Being Julia' (lack of publicity and the risible R rating) suggests that in addition to the publicized ratings criteria (swear words, nudity, volence etc.) there is a secret MPAA rule, something like this:

"Should the movie in question contain any original thought, the rating must be adjusted _up_ by at least 1 level;

Should the movie be based on a thought that questions the current institutional order (i.e., family, religion, state-run capitalism, America's superiority etc.) whether rightly or wrongly and may appear to be persuasive, it must be assigned either R or NC-17 rating;

Alternatively, if the movie has the effect of numbing or dumbing the puiblic it should be granted a milder rating (e.g., R instead of NC-17 etc.; R instead of 'Snuff' etc.)"

Since USA is ruled by a redneck and half of its population are the same as him, I wouldn't find it odd that it was rated R. And (my word is to balazs who opened this subject) Hungarians are free in mind for sex in my personal experience after the 6 years I spent in your lovely country :)))

Peace!!!

Why is that? You don't *seriously* think that the President of the United States has the time to watch and rate movies, do you? And how do you think they get half to population to see a tiny little movie like this and rate it, too?

The MPAA, which puts ratings on movies, has guidelines they use to determine which ratings are doled out to various movies. The guidelines say nothing about contacting the President and half the US to ask them what any given movie should be rated.

Do you speak Snarkish? http://snarkish.com

Ha, your President can do as much or as little as he likes.

It is the people behind him who do the work, he is just a front man for the Neo Conservatives. They take positions that they can keep after they get the next puppet President elected.

That way if you get the media also, you insert policies to enslave your population, financially take other the world. Then you can give all to your masters the corporations.

A few years ago, I watched a report on Bohemian Grove, which showed that many of the top polititions and businessman were there. It showed them performing mock sacrifices to a 'demonic statue'. I laughed hard.

Doesn't seem so rediculous now. Only people who worship evil could possibly be leading the world in the way the U.S.A. does.

Not to worry if you beleive what you are told, keep your head down they won come knocking for you. WORK CONSUME DIE.

its funny how ur trying to convince him that your president isnt the one who rates movies... is that how u think its done in europe?

reply

It's worse than that: he's a faux redneck. A real redneck might have b a lls sufficient to stand up to the neocon death-cultists around him. This guy is just a dry-drunk son of privilege.

I may be mistaken, but didn't Julia use the F-word. I believe that's an automatic R rating.

reply

I'm not sure if I remember hearing anyone swear... like at all.

As an American, I'm less than proud of the MPAA rating system. This was a PG-13 movie if I ever saw one.

reply

hey yall, i just have a question. Me and my friends are thinking of seeing a movie, and we havent really found a good one, but we were thinking of seeing this one. does anyone recommend it highly. and about the swearing, i think u can say f *** in a PG-13, but you cant really say it more than 2 or 3 times, and then its an R.

tess: u know wut your problem is?

danny: i only have one?

:)

reply

I watched BJ last night and loved it. But I also went to bed scratching my head about the "R" rating.

I guess it garnered the rating because we saw a 3 second, grainy glimps of Tom's ass as well as a brief simulated scene of intercourse. Oh, and one character eludes to being a lesbian, while another admits to "playing for the other team". In the current (but temporary) Puritanical America, we can't speak of or see the human body out of its clothes.

OMG...dudes, like...you all have it wrong...this movie is like...rated NC - 17! It was crazy. Didn't you guys see the orgy in the middle?!?! Granted, it was slightly disturbing to see Jeremy Irons with a massive erection, but it was entertaining all the same. Everyone kept screaming suggestive expletives and I'm sure that moaning has never been made such use of in a film. It was brilliant, really. I didn't know those jolly old chaps got on so well!

Why is everyone here so incredibly anti-American? I live in this bloody country and I can't say that it's perfect or that I love it to death, but c'mon, it's not THAT bad.

Also, blaming a film's rating on the overabundance of morals in America...really? It seems to me that the morals of this country have been in a steady decline since the Roaring 20s (with a slight increase in the early to mid-50s). The ratings board is a group of parents who decide a movie's rating based on what they do or don't want their children to see. Even if their views may be slightly more conservative than yours, that's no reason to bash them for it.

Here's a novel idea--why don't THEY worry about what they don't want their children to see, and let the rest of us see what we want?

Busybodies with the attitude "I don't like it, therefore I'm not letting ANYONE seeit!" are what's caused half the ridiculous cencorship in this country (which is certainly no longer the "Land of the Free")

reply

I think it was rated R for a few seconds of nudity and a scene of lovemaking. I suspect the filmmakers could have easily trimmed or re-edited those scenes without losing the sense of the scenes, if they had really WANTED a PG-13. Obviously, they didn't want it so kudos to them for making a film for grown-ups.

This is a wonderful film that many parents will want to see with their older children. Kudos to them as well.

Depends on the kid. If a 13-year-old is mature enough to watch it with his or her parents, then it is probably suitable. There's no language, and just a little brief nudity and sex.

reply

I don't know about the "R" rating, and I guess that I'm less than shocked, but what can you do? I liked the movie regardless...

By the way:
I believe that you're allowed one "f-word" per PG-13 rating, and as for the MPAA rating system and all the other America bashing that goes on here:
If you live here and don't like it; leave.
If you don't live here and don't like it; then for the love of whatever is holy, DON'T COME HERE!
I personally think that any place where you don't have to be responsible for choosing what your children watch, let alone be responsible for ANYTHING else in your life is a fantastic place. Ha!
