Vet from Jersey comment?

Could someone explain Julia's comment to the blond woman who knew her from her childhood on Jersey, when she's talking to Julia at dinner and Julia responds that her father was a vet and was always at the woman's house tending to the bitches? Is she just being bitchy? But what is bitchy about someone having a lot of dogs? Sorry, I just don't get it.

The blond woman, Florence Coltraine was a phony, jealous bitch and tried to put Julia down in front of her male friend Rupert who admired her. Julia got the vibe and gave it back to her.

Florence to Rupert: Jumped-up little tart, that's what she is. Never stops acting, on-stage or off. She's just one big pose.... I know all about her. We were both born in the channel islands, jersey. Her father was our doctor. A jersey doctor! You can't get more common than that.

Florence to Julia: Rupert and I want you to settle an argument. I think I used to know your father in Jersey, he was a doctor, wasn't he? He used to come to our house quite often.

Julia: Actually, he was a vet, he used to go to your house to deliver the bitches. Your house was full of them.

Female Dog - Bitch.

This was my favorite scene in the film. So funny and bitchy, and Bening delivered that line with cutglass precision.

Yeah!

I agree that line was great, she hit the comedy timing right on.

I think it pisses God off when you walk by the colour purple in a field and don't notice it.

It's a pun. The woman's a bitch, just like all female dogs, technically.
