Transforming robots???

Doesn't it seem a little unnecessary to have the robots transform from terrestrial vehicles to these incredible giant robots when it really is not an element of the plot?

Um.. no. They do it cause it kicks ass. Plus, it was an element of the plot. Watch it again.

It was a plot point. The alien ships were disguising themselves as earth aircraft to move around. The harrier did it early on to sneak past guards and the 7474 likely was doing it looking for the crashed alien.
