82 year war????

So there are these very advanced aliens that can come to earth and have weapons that can blow things to bits, but it takes them 82 years to wipe us out. And really would they go to war with a whole planet because we killed one of them.

I think the SFX were good. But they needed a lot of work on the script.

My impression is that they landed in 2002, found out that those filthy vermins known as earthlings had basically assassinated their kin, and WENT BACK HOME and prepared for war. Seeing that they lived in a galaxy far, far away I guess it took some time to get back and start Operation Wipe Our Ass With Dead Humans. That's my take on the thing.

With their technology, why just not blow the Earth to bits? We can do that with ordinary nukes. Obviously, they did not wont to occupy the Earth, just take revange. By the way, can´t talk logic in this movie anyway... P90 as a military weapon in 2080´s??!! Harriers??!! Technology, logic, future... means nothing in this movie.

reply

I think the reason for the P90 is because they were hiding in Tibet and were spending all their time on creating the time machine. And the professor did mention something about magnetic field change shows that P90 worked on the aliens.

buddies,

the real question is, why weren't the aliens able to free this little fellow ET by themselves before it could get hurt or killed in the first place? they had all the technology to intervene (surely without leaving a trace), but instead they stayed in orbit waiting for these two human to finish the job. just when it's all done they feel like coming down, shaking hands and vanishingagain. that's something I can't get past.

Life is pain! Anyone who says different is trying to sell you something.

Um.... Maybe because they couldn't locate their alien buddy on earth. They had no clue where the hell he was. Why do you think they used newscasters from AROUND THE GLOBE to transmit their message to humanity. If you'd payed atention during the movie you'd have noticed that the little alien guy sends a beacon to the mothership the second he gets inside the pod during the whole explosion on the oilrig. It was only then that they could home in on his location and came to pick him up.
Notice that they are dressed in armor when they get out of their transformer ship. They were probably expecting a fight of some sort.

Do you realise what you're reading is just my sig?

reply

I think you ALL missed the point! If they ended the war too soon or blew the earth to bits then there would be no movie! Plus, say you were the aliens and you could blow the earth up... would you really do that if you had neato transformer ships that can totally fool the humans?!?! The obvious answer is USE THE TRANSFORMER SHIPS! *sings power ranger theme song*

Dood, if i was one of those aliens (fortunatly for you i'm not) i would totally use my transformer ship to freak out da humans. Put pics of it out on alien kazaa/alien internet. yeah...

Maybe the aliens' culture has a more revenge-driven factor than ours. Also, 82 year war? So? Perhaps the beings don't have the technology to destroy an entire planet, or were wise enough to realize that animals such as sharks, deer, hawks, etc. only killed when absolutely necessary (food or defending their young), and don't have the petty ego's of man.

As for they were using technology from the 1900's in the 2080's? Well, you still use a shovel or a spoon or a wheel now and then, right?

reply

Sure, but weapons get repleced after about every 50 years( P90-1980´s + 50 =2030, Harrier 1970´s-2020). The story and details are totaly irrevelant in this movie, just sit down and have fun with action scenes.

reply

It takes time and money to develop new weapons systems. If the SHTF right now all I have right now is a gun based on a 60 year old model to defend myself with. I imagine if weapons, food, etc are scarce we'll be fighting with a lot of hand me downs.

It's people like you who critique this movie for having an 82 year war plot hole, then you go to Spiderman and dont' even begin to question how he gets his powers.

If you got bit by a radioactive spider... you'd F*CKING DIE.

In all seriousness... there are plot holes that I'm willing to dispend my disbelief for, and then some that go far beyond believable.

This plot was one of those that I didnt even give a second thought to the long war and just sat back and enjoyed the film

I really don't see what's the problem with an 82 year war. Considering there are several billions of humans on the planet, at least some of them kept hidden in the mountains, underground, who knows. Even with supreme technology, it's not easy tracking down every human on a planet.

reply

I think the war could go on so long because of misunderstanding. Not knowing what really went down to the lost alien on both sides. You had humans believing that the alien sent a message to invade Earth and you have the aliens believing that humans just kill for no reason etc.

reply

They called the crashed alien "the gate" and he opened what look like a wormhole to his home early in the movie. After "the gate" is returned, the mothership then opens a similar wormhole and goes home.

My interpretation is that the crashed alien was their navigator or had some special power the others didn't have. When he died, the aliens were trapped in our universe/galaxy/whatever and proceeded to try to kill us. However, there were no reinforcements, just one ship. It's like mowing a football field with a weed wacker. Sure it works well, but it's going to take awhile.

reply

It could be something like that.

One ship to wipe everything will take a lot of years. And they sure lost few units.

In the last attack, before the time travel, we see only few of aliens, not a full scale attack.

it takes the whole US army already more than 6 years to find one single old and breaky old man hidden in some caves in pakistan or afghanistan.

reply

You forgot to mention that the breaky (that's not a word by the way) old man is a BILLIONARE & he has a huge network of people that believe the same garbage he believes & that even the entire Armed forces don't have time to go through ALL of the countryside. Did you realize that there were Japanese on some of the Islands after WWII for up to 20 years later? Granted many of them probably knew the war was over, but there were many more that didn't surrender until years after the war was over.

Not a good comparison. It's easier to destroy a whole stack of hay than to find a needle in it without destroying the stack.

82 years of war doesn't really make sense. But neither does this "hey the crashed pal didn't survive, so let's kill everyone on this planet" plot.
