Subject says it all. Nicholson was his usual awesome Nicholson-villain self, but man alive did Eric Tsang nail it in IA!! So incredibly creepy/powerful/scary/hateful. One of the best on-screen villains ever.

Nicholson is entertaining in The Departed, but his performance is over-the-top and hilarious - not in the least bit menacing.

shareJack Nicholson was in many ways playing Whitey Bulger who has finally been arrested after all these years. He wasn't imitating his Hong Kong counterpart.

Actually, in most ways he wasn't playing Bulger since that's not even remotely close to how Bulger behaved.
It was a giant fail on Nicholson's part, and shame on Scorsese for failing to reign him in.
The Departed is a good film but it would have been epic if they had convinced Hackman to play Costello.
