Why did Van Helsing spray Anna with something to make her pass out?

Right after they meet for the first time and the fighting dies down they're walking around Anna's house. Out of nowhere he sprays Anna with something that makes her pass out. What the hell was that about and what did he spray her with anyway?

He sprays her to prevent her from leaving. He thinks she’ll die if she goes out there alone and he doesn’t want to leave at that point. They argue about it right before he sprays her with the knock out gas.

in the commentary, it says he punched her in the face, but that was cut out...
