So the people of Transylvania live in an area where vampire attacks are common. So what do they do when they hear the flapping of wings at night? They go outside to investigate. Instead of, say, peaking out window.

They deserve to be eaten.

I thought the villagers showed great courage in going outside to try to fend off the vampires

I'd say some of the villagers in the Wolf Man remake from 2010 are dumber. Like the one who falls into the trap he set for the Wolf Man.
