what did steve martin's letter say?

I started watching this late on TV. When I turned it on, Claire Danes was sobbing on a bed behind Steve Martin after reading a letter he has written her. She keeps crying as she leaves and tells Steve Martin she can't go to New York with him now. What did he say in the letter? What is the backstory to this?

When he was in Seattle on business as he often traveled he slept with an old 'lover' of his.
He wrote Maribelle the letter on the flight back.
It pretty much said
'There is no easy way to say this except to just say it. I slept with someone. It wasn't romantic or meaningful. I am only telling you because you deserve to know. If I could take it back I would.'

He invited her to New York on business with him.

I am envious of their type of relationship.
I adore this movie.
And everytime- I am left hoping she doesn't turn around and walk away in the end. You can tell that as he says he DID love her-she wishes she would have stayed. Okay, end rant. LOL.

Weird, I turned it on at that exact scene as well.

You know what's crazy, so did I. I was getting on to ask the same question.
