Why Her?

When Mirabelle and Ray had dinner the first time, she was thinking "Why me?" Did they ever explain what it was about Mirabelle that attracted Ray in the first place?

reply

because she's not the obvious beauty. She's beautiful in an unusual way which rarely gets recognized in modern LA.

it's not explained and i don't think it needs to be. let me add my own thoughts, though, as someone who is close to being in ray porter's stage of life.

what attracted ray to mirabelle is that she looked real. for example, there was the other 'shopgirl' (lisa?), blonde and tarty and willing to use sex to get a man. he wasn't interested in that kind of obvious, sexual relationship. mirabelle, although not conventionally attractive, had a certain quality of being 'real' in plastic LA that he was drawn to. i think he recognized in her the same kind of aloof alienation that he felt. ray doesn't connect easily with others or with life around him and he thought he saw a kindred soul in her.

there is also the hint of a predatory nature in him, too. one could imagine him occasionally strolling through sak's to find a young woman whom he could impress with his wealth. this would be a perfect stalking ground for the introverted, alienated character that he seemed to be.

Mplee23's point makes sense to me.
that explains everything.

on the other hand, i am wondering...
Can a young girl really ignore the age difference and truely in love with an old mam?

reply

Yep. Been there done that. Was not AT ALL attracted to the guys my own age at all but older guys oooohhhh yeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh. *sigh* It all goes back to father/daughter relationships. I didn't have a mature male in my life growing up and it did affect me. Because CD's character in the movie has an estranged relationship with her father, it follows that she'd be attracted to a more mature man.
