I was reading some of those 'what perv' posts on here about the concept of someone like his character dating someone like hers... but after watching Steve on Leno at the time, I was under the impression that they really did date!?

As I understand it, it was not Clare Danes that Steve Martin dated, but rather the real life 'Mirabelle' - an artist in LA. The charecter's name is changed in the movie and book, but the art she makes in the movie is very much like the real woman's work. I did some web searching and some JPEG's of her photos - flash-photo self portraits of herself in white dresses in front of trees.
