'why me?'

After ray and mirabelle's first date the narrator says some line about Mirablelle wondering one thing, that was "why me?" I don't feel this was ever answered, or maybe I missed something, why her?

You're right that the story kind of goes from A to M, if not exactly Z, when Ray approaches her the first time and we had no idea who he is or that he'd probably been watching her. But I think it was answered by her performance. The way she plays it, Mirabelle is not only attractive and young but sharp and intelligent and very in touch with herself. Also kind of brave, open, and truthful. Not every young woman in her early 20s has the finesse to behave the way she does, without being immature, a bimbo, too needy, or playing games. I guess he could sense all that, the way you can pick up a lot in your first impression of a person. She's like a breath of fresh air to him.
