It's not the worst move, however...


Despite the fact that Steve Martin adapted the screenplay himself, this movie manages to miss the whole point. In the novel [SPOILERS], Ray eventually has a major revelation--that he's become Mirabelle's father (...buying her clothes, paying off her college loans, etc).

This awakening has a transformative effect which leads Ray to stop sleeping with Mirabelle and start caring about her. There was at least a modicum of redemption included in the story...whereas in the movie, there's just this hokey reunion scene at the end where Ray tries to convince us that he really loved Mirabelle all along.

And that it's all just part of life.
