How did the machine cuse world war three?
It's been years since I've seen the movie but how did the machine cause world war three?
I mean it's supposed to be secret right, so how could it have had that much impact on the world?
It wasn't a secret.What happened was that they used the machine and saw that a country would start WW3 so that country was attacked so they couldn't do that except that when they were attacked the country started WW3.

I think it was my mistake I took it that the machine itself by its very existence caused the war.
It did in away. If the machine didn't exist there would never have been a war or atleast thats how I seen it affleck says at one point whatever future the machine predicted we make happen. It predicted a plague so we round up all the sick people and create a plague, it predicted war so we went to war to prevent it and one of the newspaper's say 'president orders pre-emptive strike'
It's a self fulfilling prophecy for example say the US had this machine in the cold war it could predict a nuclear war so the US nukes russia in a preemptive strike and actually starts a nuclear war.
That happened because everyone knew exactly what the future predictions were.
