Wish they wouldn't have half-assed it so. They should've made Marie and Alex an actual couple. Then maybe the family would've had a problem with gays, or maybe Marie in particular. Would've made the whole thing a bit more realistic than having Marie go so unhinged over an unrequited crush. Alex seems to be straight, and as is, the family was never the thing in Marie's way, since she'd not expressed her feelings. Plus additionally it would've provided a social commentary.

I actually prefer it this way. It does not follow tropes and does not make caricatures of the characters (family being bigots, alex being justified, etc). Sometimes people go crazy. Often its for love. And it already provides social commentary.
