I lived in Tokyo for 2 years

I have to say as a westerner this movie got a lot of things right. I had my small apartment in Tokyo along with my used Honda Prelude Si(right hand side steering wheel of course). The traffic was a nightmare during the day but at night the streets were mostly barren. Driving around Tokyo at night was very lonely, so many thousands of little shops and stores along with high rises and colorful signs, city lights but in the end it was so much sameness. Hard to describe but this movie depicted it well.
I will tell you what though. Japanese people(deep down) may not really welcome you as a foreigner but if you need any help or direction they will go way, way out of their own way to get you where you're going.
In the end, Tokyo is similar to other mega city living around the world. You're crowded in a small place with ten million or so people and still you don't know many people or have many close human connections at all. Years later I worked in Okinawa and this Japanese man told me he was so happy to get out of crowded/loud/lonely Tokyo and move/work in a nice, warm island like Okinawa.
