It was awful. Easily the worst film by the Coen Brothers and from Tom Hanks. Absolutely terrible.

This film takes a lot of work to comprehend and a lot of education to appreciate. It's so filled with metaphors from such a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, that the Coen brothers could pull off such a masterpiece is exhilarating. A film like this is going to have a very small range of fans, but eventually this film will be recognized as one of if not the best film they made.
I would imagine Hanks' didn't find the role difficult to portray since his acting repertoire has grown over the years. His acting in this movie was perfectly suited to the character created.
Sorry, but the OP is right. It sucked donkey balls. And by the way, Joe Versus the Volcano was awesome.
