Wow. I guess "They all look alike to me" isn't just a bad joke.
It's basic psychology. If you've never seen too many black people you are going to have difficulties in distinguishing one individual from the other.
This of course works both ways and sideways too. I personally have trouble telling apart people of Indian or East Asian descent.
It's all about with whom you grew up with. You recognize the kind of people with whom you're in contact regularly. Of course there are individual variables, some are more adept at recognizing those little details that make up a human face while some are quite inept in the task.
