The funniest movie ever
Totally.
IF YOU TAKE LIFE TOO SERIOUSLY, YOUL NEVER GET OUT ALIVE
Err what??? Poorest remake ever!
shareWell, its on tele now. Its OK so far! :O)
But then I have not paid a fiver to see it.
No seriously, this movie sucks. The Coen brothers totally missed the point of the Ealing version.

Firstly, what was the point of the Ealing version that you believe they missed?
And secondly, did they need to get it? I thought this movie stood alone very well. I normally don't like Tom Hanks (yet he's been in a lot of movies I do like) but I thought he was good in this. His accomplices were all well played, and the landlady and police officers stole the show. I was expecting a disaster after the reviews I read and heard but I found it to be a functional, funny, competent comedy.
My body makes no moan
But sings on:
All things remain in God.
Well, I enjoyed it. So there! :O)
And Tom Hanks is mostly FAB anyway!
"What was the point of the Ealing movie they missed".
I'd say two things.
1. The whole point of the original was that a group of toughs was defeated by a small, frail old lady. In the remake she was a big, assertive mama who was actually tougher than the crooks and hit them several times.
2. The central comedic part of the movie should be the sequence when the crooks start killing each other. In the remake this is rushed through in about 10-15 minutes.
Also the story is a bit dumbed down, e.g. the stupidity of the big ox is exaggerated to a cartoon level, and the whole gang is such a bunch of incompetant buffoons its not at all funny that they end up loosing.
The C. brothers are much better than this and were just having a bad day.
The Ealing version is a metaphor for postwar Britain, and an ingenious one at that. By taking the movie completely out of context, the Coen brothers seem to have either not recognised this or simply disregarded it.
I normally like Tom Hanks, but he didn't impress in this.
Why would the Coen Brothers need to take the Ealing movie's post war Briton metaphor into consideration? This movie is a good stand alone picture, and it has plenty things to say itself. I'm sure the original didn't need to be remade, and in a way it wasn't.

*JOKING*
Personally, I feel the Coens should have worked for a whole new film. Calling it 'The Ladykillers' and making a somewhat vague remake seems altogether pointless to me.
Well it's all a matter of opinion. But I highly doubt that the Coens hurt the original at all by doing this movie.
"The United States is a nation of laws: badly written and randomly enforced."-FZ
I totally agree. The point is they made a remake and used their own style top adjust it. Not everyone is going to like a remake of a film they liked, but to say they msised the point is stupid. Im sure they got the point behind the original, but they made their own interpretation. Not my favorite Coen Brother movie, but certainly not as bad people make it seem.
shareAgreed 100% People did the same thing to Stanley Kubrick when he made The Shining and A Clockwork Orange. High Fidelity was changed from England to Chicago. The point being things change when someones interpretation comes into play. High Fidelity was changed bcause having the movie in England would be unnatural and hokey feeling. So there are many reasons to change a film or book when creating it in the current day. I'm also very very sure that the Coen's understood the original just fine they just have they're own interpretations of the film/book/what have you. I think this movie is great not the best from the Coen's but a very good and totally watchable flick.
shareI found it one of the most entertaining, witty and cleverly played and written films. No need to look at the old British version and find it here. That's another movie, another time and country, with the vague similarity of circumstance (one old lady, five would be thugs). Excellent and funny.
shareOne old lady, five would-be thugs, similar plot.... THE SAME TITLE...
sharei found Spoiler
toma hanks dying hilarious lol
Agreed. XD
This movie was the best.
I don't think it was the funniest movie EVER, but it was funny! LOL! Got a little bored though with the way Hanks spoke, like over-acting helloooo...
sharethe coen brothers oeuvre has alway relied upon remake/adaptation/homage and i believe this flick, as a remake, is great.
tom hanks performance is brilliant; for me, easily the best he has given.
if you (understandably, i know) approach this as a movie written, directed, edited, etc. by the freakin' coen brothers, you might be disappointed; this isn't in the same league as fargo or big labowski or barton fink.
but...if you want to watch a hilarious and surreal movie with some great dialogue and even better acting, you can't do much better than this.
thanks

I hate when people judge a movie simply because they compare it too much to the original.
That's why it is called a REMAKE. A different approach you know.
Gee stop trying so hard to be a movie god or whatever, the movie is *beep* hilarious, I couldn't care less about the original while I was watching it.
Try a different mindset people, you'll have more fun. Peace!
Yes, I really like this film. It is as Coen as it gets, and the music is awesome. Very funny movie. Don't see why people are so divided over this one....
shareHere are the scenes that I found funny. Here be spoilers:
Mrs. Munson slaps Gawaine for swearing.
The way the expression on the face of Othar's picture keeps changing. Reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies episodes where they showed the picture of Drysdale's father.
The cat, Pickles, keeps watching everything the bad guys do. I've always thought that cats were funny when they watched people.
When Pancake's finger gets blown off, Pickles runs away with it.
Pickles might be the reincarnation of Othar because he kept trying to protect her.
When Gawaine and Elron hear the explosion and he says, "You fart?" and Elron laughs and says no. I love fart humor!
