Oh my god! They stole my idea!

Hey there,

Well well well. This is interesting. I found out about this movie a while back, and I decided to watch it...only to jump out of my seat in shock!

He he. Well, why you ask? Well...while you are all going on about how original this film is...let me tell you something. Ages ago, I wrote a short film screenplay, about a wealthy couple who want their son 're-cloned' (he was genetically modified to begin with) because he died. They are adamant that the new son not find out about this, but the son discovers his 'old' brother, and starts to hallucinate and in the end kills himself. I have just recently got it made, but this short script was floating around cyberspace for quite a while before it got picked up.

Coincidence? I wonder? Well...if you look at it from my point of view...Hollywood seems to be tapping into my brain at the moment. I have written screenplays...only to go to the cinema and find my ideas on the screen! Let me break it down for you:

Secret Window (I know...it's Stephen King...but seeming as I actually pitched this one to a mid-exec in HW, I start to wonder.)
My idea was pretty much the same, about a writer who's literary creation comes to haunt him when he kills him off. Hmm...

Alien vs. Predator. Lost cities of Antartica...metal below the ice sheets...well. When I saw the trailer, I...again...nearly died. But...then the monsters came on, and frankly, I'm glad I'm not involved with that crap. But the beginning is so similar to a script of mine...it's scary!

Godsend (as I said)

Thirteen (again, obviously a coincidence...but still weird). The first script I wrote (back in 2000) was about..a young teenage girl who wants to get with the 'cool girl' and ends up taking drugs and falling into a downward spiral. I even had the recovering alcoholic mother in there...so similar to my script, it's starting to get on my nerves.

Make your own mind up. If you're a HW exec (perhaps the one who tried to seduce me at the Beverly Hills Hotel), you're in trouble. But...I really don't mind, after all, it's great to see my creations up on screen. Even if I don't get the money. What's money anyway? ;-)

Long as you don't mind, that is pretty cool :)
Maybe you should write movies as a proffesion :)

reply

Yeah...well...I do write movies...but mainly I'm a singer. See below...but also a film director. My first commercial short is coming out this winter. It's called Interference.

Ok...ok...I know, you're joking. However, you've got to look at it from my point of view. I am...well, somewhat connected with the film industry, (however small), and I have actually pitched my ideas to some 'mid' people in the industry. So...to see some of my ideas up on the screen at my local Odeon...well...it just seems crazy. But, then again, most of the screenplays that I talk about above came from verified independent sources. I'm just saying that I seem to have a knack for predicting good ideas. ;-)

'Get a life' is all I have got to say.Seriously.

Lol, obviously what she does IS her life. Jealous much?

Anyways, that does suck. I mean, timing is bad like that sometimes. I'm a fashion designer, and Ive thought of some cool ideas only to see them on the runway or in a catalog a few months later. I didn't put any of these ideas 'out there', but its not impossible for several people to have similar ideas.

But thats cool that you are so creative. Just keep on keeping on.

yeah, that does really suck. but it sounds like u have some good ideas for writing, like 'secret window' and 'thirteen', you should give one of your scripts to one of those people and then they could pitch it.

reply

im not sure i would want to take credit for Godsend.

reply

Well I don't know if it will make you feel any better but I seen an episode of the Outer Limits "ages" ago that had the exact same plotline. You should be happy the guy who wrote that isn't on a message board somewhere accusing you of trying to take credit for his work.

I'm a writer as well and it sucks when you find another work that is similar to something you created. Especially when you were excited about how unique the story was while you wrote it. Take solace in the fact that you aren't alone; there are probably hundreds of writers right now who feel ripped off because they wrote a story just like this.

He he. Glad there is someone out there who understands :-)

To the person who told me to get a life...well...I did. And it sucked. I was afraid of becoming a corporate sellout. So...I make movies. Is it that bad? :-)

I do watch the Outer Limits...and believe you me, I feel so sorry for those writers. I used to watch Sliders when I was a kid, and some of those stories were kinda similar to big budget films that came out a while later. I particularly remember an episode about how the law has changed to predict the future...and stop crimes before they happen. Minority Report anyone??

Minority Report anyone??
Philip K.Dick! Is that name rings a bell? Minority Report was based upon his short story (just like Bladerunner, Totall Recall, Impostor and Screamers). By the way he was one of the greatest SF writers. Catch up with reading :-)

He he...actally I know that. Same that Secret Window is based on a Stephen King book...and Thirteen is based on someone's real life story.

As I said above...it's only coincidence...but I think it is worth mentioning!

by the way, um, godsend kinda sucked really bad so im not sure that i would want to take credit for that either.

Did you have it registered on WGA?

reply

You know what? I should have done. However, I'm a cheapskate 19yr old...and I'm loathe if I'm going to spend $20 to register. ,-) Believe me...I keep wanting to do it...but never seem to get round to it.

Hah! Life sucks.

I was just wondering when you "claim" to have written your "Secret Window" like story. I am not judging you. For all I know you could be telling the truth, but I mean that was a novella written quite a while ago under the title, "Secret Window, Secret Garden".

Sorry...but I did. I was an ugly child ,-)
Most of my script ideas I wrote when I was at boarding school and there was nothing else to do. And then...when I got older, I started to develop them.

So, yeah. I do expect you to believe it...well...I'm not going to lie!

I know that! Believe me, if I thought they cared two hoots, I would be on their asses...but I know they don't so what's the beef?

As for thirteen...well...it is a little strange, because it was such a similar storyline. And not all about drugs...more about the longing to 'fit-in' etc. But...again...I don't actually care. Why? Cos I have plenty more ideas up my sleeve! I just thought I would share the whole thing with you nice people!
