The way u see it, its there for dramatic purposes. The police was there because of the identity theft situation but that's not enough to trigger the parents against him. I wouldn't say it was inappropriate, Dewey was being naive about the whole situation.
shareI think it's PG-13. It's no more inappropriate than the countless hangover references or the language from some of the students.
shareIn a lesser movie, Dewey would have explained in a sappy way how the kids and him learned from each other and had a some stupid message. Linklater undercuts it by having a joke instead.

shareI saw this in the theatre when it first came out. I was the only one who LOL'd at that line. After I belted out my very loud HAHA other people laughed.
shareJust watched this the other night with my kids. I haven't laughed at anything that hard in a long time. I was very nearly literally rolling on the ground laughing. :)
