Noah's Life After the War

While I enjoyed this movie, I can't help feeling afterwards that something was missing in the story: How did Noah make his living after the war? He had all the time he needed to rebuild the house but we never know what he did for a living. Did he have some sort of income to maintain the grounds? When Allie came back to him, did they live in poverty or did he have some sort of work/income we aren't told about? I realize these things could have been explained but I suspect the filmmakers felt that doing so might have damaged the story's appeal. Was any of this covered in the book? Please let me know if it was.

I always assumed when his dad died. He was left enough money to do what he needed to the house.

If you read the book, before he enlisted, he was working in a lumber yard. He was the best worker. The owner took a liking to him. Right before he came home from the war, he recieved word that the owner of the lumberyard had died. And he got the inheritance from the sale of the lumberyard. And in the book he uses the money to purshase the plantation house and fix it up. It is also mentioned that his funds were getting low, and he was going to have to get a job soon.

There's no way ONE man could have fixed that whole mansion by himself. The house was completely fallen apart. It would have taken a whole crew!

My guess is that he built furniture for a living. Before he and Allie take their boatride, she enters his shed/workshop and notices the dressers and tables. Perhaps he had a good small business going from that as he got older.
