4/10

For the acting and some nice cinemetography.

This sucks. Why exactly does it have a 7.9?

You apparently lack something regarding the human condition that other voters are able to rely on. You may yet begin to understand compassion, love, adventure and loss, you can always fix your vote later.

reply

You're a moron, Thornspike.

reply

Because 7.9 is still not enough for this perfect movie.

reply

its probably perfect for someone with a very low standard

If it's any consolation, sackofwhine, I gave it the same rating as you. The story was very predictable and rather cloying. The only thing that gave the movie any distinction was the acting of James Garner and Gena Rowlands. The whole "who does she wind up with" mystery angle was unconvincing and the resolution of it was not surprising at all. Also, Noah's behavior in the beginning of the film is immature and downright stalkerish, and yet for some reason he's given a pass. I can enjoy romantic movies, but this one I found highly overrated.

its one of the fakest, corniest and down right dumbest romance movies I've ever seen. Its a pretty horrible movie and I don't see why people give it such a high rating. Emotional garbage

You rated Bad Santa and The Simpsons Movie a 10 and an 8 respectively.

What I'm trying to say is that your rating of 4 for The Notebook is completely irrelevant.

reply

I gave bad santa a 10 because its one of the greatest comedy of all time. I gave The Simpsons movie because its a great animated comedy.

Fair ratings for great movies.

You not appreciating these actual well made movies is proof that you have a horrible taste.

Out of curiosity, do you have any example of what you would consider a good romance movie?

I have mixed feelings about this one. It was definitely overly saccharine, the script was lacking (when it wasn't cheesy it was unimaginative) and I felt a little cheated at the ending (like, was that all?).
Sometimes it felt realistic and authentic, especially Ryan Gosling brought a sense of that IMO. His performance was good and I liked his line that it was going to be hard work, but he still wanted her (even though she was a pain in the ass 99% of the time lol). It ended up the most touching line for me because it seemed more true to life (in addition to his acting).
I also appreciated the focus on dementia, and that "twist" felt less cheap than the others.

However the movie often felt inauthentic, immature and kind of manipulative.

Unlike you, I think Gena Rowlands could have been a lot better. Garner and McAdams were ok.
