horses

A little off topic, but does anyone know about any equitation movies?

reply

Do you mean equitation as in the art of riding, or just horse movies in general?

'Happiness. It made the whole dying thing pretty bearable.'

Godfather has an enjoyable scene with a horse.

National Velvet is really good. It stars a very young Elizabeth Taylor.

The Horse Whisperer is also excellent.

Horse movies that horse people enjoy:

About Three-Day Eventing:
International Velvet
Sylvester

Racing:
Phar Lap (2 versions, though Australian version is very hard to find)
The Black Stallion

Other horse films:
The Man From Snowy River

If you are looking for a good reality like show, try finding "Road to the Maclay'. Not sure when it aired, but an excellent portrayal of how much work teens do to qualify for the Maclay medal final in Syracuse NY.

Movies that horse people enjoy making fun of:

Seabiscuit (sorry, but hollywood took the horse out of this film)
Virginia's Run (so-many-errors!!!)
Lightning the White Stallion (oh, so much fun to make fun of)

This might be a crazy movie for horses, but Hallmark Channel put out "The Long Shot." The plot is predictable, acting is cheesy, but the dressage is beautiful.

reply

I want to see that film. I'm thinking about buying it off Amazon. What do you give it out of 10?

reply

Disney's "The Horsemasters" was pretty decent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0561296/). It was made for the Disneyland TV show back in the 60'. They did a couple of episodes. It's about a bunch of kids in an English riding school.

Not sure if you can find it on video, though.

reply

Hey! Don't fotget "DREAMER" is a beautiful one too.Don't miss it.

"Into the West", an Irish film with Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin, and Colm Meany is highly underrated a worth a look. It's jacketed and often found in the kid's section, but it's far from a kid's movie. It's my second pick just under "The Black Stallion" with "Seabiscuit" a close third for horse movies.

reply

"and" worth a look...Sorry, these smartazz phones have a mind of their own and a cruel sense of humor.

reply

"jacketed like" ...I give up, my fingers are too big I guess. Just please give the film a go, even if I'm technically challenged.
