Significance of the Apple?

Does anyone know what the apple is supposed to represent?

The machines are shown carrying / holding it several times throughout the movie - specifically, in BOTH U.N. Scenes of The Second Renaissance.

Any Ideas?

From what I gathered it represents humanity. As the humans became corrupt so did the apple and it rotted away. Then the machines are holding it because at that point we are basicaly in the palm of their hands and since we are no longer corrupt and nothing more than slaves the apple becomes whole again. Possibly showing that there is still hope for humanity.

I think it might also represent the relationship beween man and machine though.

Sorry, but i think you're probably wrong. I seriously doubt that the apple would be representing something as complex as that. Apples are usually representations of temptation (eg biblical, see also snow white). if the robots had an owl in their hand maybe... The apple represents temptation - i.e., will the humans give into their base desires for superiority, their fear of those different to them? on another level, the apple being held by the robots is symbolic of the robots being in the posession of the means to effect the human's 'fall from grace' (i.e., the apple as a object, a means to an end).

There you go.

I think the Machines are the apple. In the Bible, the apple is the seed of man's downfall. As it was an abuse of what we were given. The machines are an abuse of creation. The apple in Genesis was supposed to make man like God. When man tried to be like God, and created life, it destroyed us.

I'm not a religious person, but I thought i'd just point out that in the Bible the fruit from the tree of knowledge isn't specified. I think it's thought to be a banana, but the evidence for that i'm not informed on.

But I agree that apples are usually a biblical reference of temptation.

IMO the apple was just a peace offering. They decided to bring something that was significant that was organic and couldn't really be built by them and, since Zero One was created in the cradle of civilization and where human life,( according to the Christian bible)was created they sent an Adam and Eve as delegates and an apple as a peace offering. Well since the humans didn't agree to be peaceful and work with the robots, like the robots had asked for, the rotting of the apple signifies that we were given a chance at something, but we most likely killed the Zero One delegates and then resorted to violence and a chance at peace rotted away. The second apple, the one the machine is holding in the courtroom after the war, shows that they now have the upper hand, they gave us this chance and we pissed it away, and they still have the power to give it to use again but they are keeping this one, so it places the apple on the desk and keeps it there.

Man did not create life by eating the apple though.

There is no wrong, the apple was simply put there to be interpreted into our own minds. We give it meaning, It can be deep, overlooked, or religious. But, there is no wrong in how everyone takes it into their own meaning.

Otherwise this would turn into a very unnecessary arguement...

it could be a combination of many things. like some people here have said it could represent knowledge, in that the machines knew that at anytime and at anyplace they could overpower and destroy us, as well as at the same time representing a second fall from grace of the human race. man trying to be like god ate from the forbidden tree and fell, man yet again tries to be like god and creates life and the tables are turned yet again. i myself am not religious in the least but that is just my take on it.

I found the apple in the first instance to simply be a peace offering. The machines know that humans since the start of time brought food to each other as a sign of equality and so forth.
The machines were trying to show that they felt they were equal and wanted to have a peaceful relationship with humans and were willing helpful to make the relationship work, showing this through offering food.

The second time around I felt the apple was just a sign of bitter irony, how once they were willing to give to the humans for equality, and now they own the humans the apple just represents the struggle between them.

That was just my view, all of the others brought up here sound equally feasible.

In the end where the robot is in the UN and puts his barcode in the book, I'd like to know the significance of the OTHER thing he's holding. He has an apple in one hand and a... stick in the other? I dunno what it is. Anyone?

Apple's are very significant and symbolic in Greek history and mythology. The apple represents many things "apples have been associated with love, beauty, luck, health, comfort, pleasure, wisdom, temptation, sensuality, sexuality, virility and fertility" (Apple History).
IMO, The great majority of machines wanted peace and prosperity with humans which is why they brought the apple (with all it's historical meaning) to the U.N. meeting.
