Do you guys think that if the book didn't exist...

...this movie would be better received?

A good portion of people seem to hate the movie because "it's nothing like the book", so my question is "If the book didn't exist (if the movie was created on its own), would the reaction still be the same or would it be different?"

Almost certainly. On its own, the movie was fun. In fact, I think that they should have just cut the few points connecting it to the book and made it a movie with an original plot. It was three-quarters of the way there anyway...

Definitely. The first time I watched the movie, I had read the book right before and was kind of shocked. However, after watching the movie again today years after the last time I read the book, I love the movie. Hathaway and Dancy were spectacular, and it really was a good movie in its own right. Really, I think the only mistake the filmmakers made was keeping the same title. They could have changed the title and made a little side note that the movie was "inspired" by the book, and people probably wouldn't have been so p.o.'d.

If I hadn't read the book I think I would have thought better of the movie, but I don't think I would have really liked it. Even ignoring the book altogether, the movie still feels more like a poorly-done combination of Ever After and Shrek.

I loved this movie, and found it to be very fun. I never even knew there was a book about it. I think the movie itself is very good on its own.

I loved the movie. I didn't even know there was a book until long after I'd seen the movie. It's one of the only ones in my DVD collection that I've watched more than twice. I have read the book and it was probably Gail Carson Levine's best book in my opinion but it didn't take away from my appreciation of the movie. I definitely understand where people are coming from though. I can't watch a single Harry Potter film without wanting to throw things at the screen for the things they messed up and the good bits they left out.

I think the same way with the Lord of the Rings.

I feel the same way about both Ella Enchanted and Harry Potter. 

Yeah, I definitely believe so because this is one of my favorite movies, I saw it like 6 times and every time I laugh and it makes me feel happy. I think it is brilliant.

Without reading the rest of the replies. I'm going to answer yes. I didn't read the book and I like the movie.
