Is Coraline inspired by Silent Hill?

Both are set in foggy settings and is about a parallel universe called the Other World

Both parallel universes are controlled by supernatural female demonic god-like entities who create demonic creatures that are representatives of the people in the real world that the protagonist lives in

Both parallel universes unravel/transition whenever it reverts to its true form

Both protagonists of Coraline and Silent Hill are provided clues in the climax in their respective Other Worlds

Both protagonists live in foggy settings in the real world

Both OSTs sound eerily familiar in a creepy and "atmospheric" kinda way.

And I'd also like to add that Harry Mason and his daughter Cheryl (protagonists of Silent Hill) stayed in Oregon after the events of the first game (I'm not sure please correct me), the same state where the events of Coraline took place. Not really part of the theory but its interesting how coincidental this is.

I smell a YouTube theory coming

I'd say Alice in Wonderland and fairy mythology before going Silent Hill, but I acknowledge it is at least technically possible.

Never say "Worst movie ever" to someone who's seen Highlander 2

Didnt Coraline come out before Silent Hill? Becaude Coraline was a book originally

The original Silent Hill game was released in 1999 (please correct me) and Coraline was written in 2002. I think Neil Gaiman is a Silent Hill fan considering the similarities between Coraline and the game.

Two different works can be inspired by each other or develop the same ideas independently. Either way, it’s fine.

I watched the movie last night and I literally couldn't stop thinking about Silent Hill... This is basically the SH movie we should have gotten (except way cuter and less horrid).

reply

I LOVE less cute and horrid!

reply

I don't think it is. I wasn't reminded of it in any way.

reply

I get your point in similarities but SH didn't crossed my mind when I watched Coraline twice now. Maybe, maybe not.

Probably, and most likely a lot more material along with Silent Hill.

And in 100 years some other wonderfully creative piece of cinema/television/etc will be created and people will be saying "was this influenced by silent hill/coraline/etc???"

and 100 years ago the first motion pictures came out and people probably said "Was this influenced by (insert fictional novel of the mid/late 1800's)". The point is that anyone capable of writing/directing/producing at this level is influenced 90% by things they've watched/read/etc in their past. Unless you're the only human in history that thinks someone is able to climb out of their mother's vagina, spend their lives all the way to adulthood in a room closed off from the rest of the world, and then create something similar to Coraline or Silent Hill. No.... and thank god for that, because many different stories, life lessons, etc, are carried through time because most writers/artists/etc draw from their inspiration and carry forth the message & beauty
