a horrible movie that made no sense

In the original movie, the wives were actually replaced by robots. True to the original movie, it appeared that the wives were robots earlier in this verision (like the ATM spitting out money wife). Other scenes also imply that the wives are non-human

Then, as it turns out, the women only have some "robotic device" implanted in them -- which easily can be removed.

Either the movie should have, from the start, made it clear that the wives were not really being replaced (ala the first movie or even Invasion of the Body Snatchers) or remained true to the fact (as in the first movie) that the women were being replaced with robots (and also being killed in the process).

This movie tried to have it both ways, which made it a disaster. If I were one of the main actors in the movie, I simply would have said that if we are going to have the movie go in the direction as it went in the end, omit the ATM scene and a couple other ones as well, also give a little clue at the beginning that they were not going to be robot wives -- only under a type of mindcontrol.

Well they wanted the happy ending so they had to change it several times.

No other movie has Nicole Kidman vs Robot Christopher Walken.

Dream on. They refilmed it with no regard for continuity and then asked us to swallow their lazy work, which some of us did. This is how far we have gone with our complacency with the media.

it was just the worse remake of a great movie that i have ever seen. they couldnt decide if the women were robots or they just had "chips" in them - didnt make sense.

reply

I think the problem is that the filmmakers tried to remake a very dark horror movie without wanting to make it dark or include much horror. They didn't want the edgy debates about gender equality, or the darker themes of murder and jealousy, so they tried to make a broad comedy out of that material & it just didn't work, imo. They did try to have it both ways- 'the men are destroying their wives, but oh wait, they're not really that bad! Let's not wind up in a serious discussion about these issues... that's just too serious & unpleasant'... Nope, didn't care for it myself. I know some people much prefer the comedy & silliness in the remake version, but if you're looking for a more serious movie about gender issues, murder & betrayal, a movie likely to unnerve you & spur debate, I'd say go for the original.

This was on TV last night, and I made the mistake of watching it in the vain hope it would improve as it progressed, but to no avail.

One of the most non-sensical parts, aside from the human/robot confusion, was with Jerry and Roger.

If Jerry had lured Roger to Stepford in order to robotize/chip him because he was always playing second fiddle to Roger's powerful job; why would he then program Roger to go for Governor of Stepford...which you would assume is a reasonably powerful job?

reply

Jerry's motives for changing Roger weren't for being second fiddle. His motives were different from the other husbands. He just wanted Roger to be a more masculine and less flamboyant gay man.

I think this movie is hilarious, fun, and very underrated.

reply

The addition of the gay couple is political correctness taken too far. It's annoying to me that the creators think the audience won't remember what they showed us 30 minutes ago. Very sad mistake of a movie.

This was about the most amatuerish movie with big name stars ever made. The writers/producers/director should be blacklisted.

reply

Or perhaps the test audience, which caused all those changes, and deletion of this scene: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1umlb_stepford-wives_fun

reply

The film tried to go for black humour and failed and its a let down compared to the original.

Its that man again!!
