I cant understand how a brillìant movie like the 1975 stepford wives had to be remade into this steaming pile of horse manure. It bears so little in resemblence to the original , no suspence , no intrigue, no horror. Why not make a musical version of the hills have eyes.
Remakes suck anyway, but this one is the worst of the worst. They thought they could stick in a bunch of stars and the audience would be too stupid to notice it was crap. Bette Midler has never been worse, Nicole Kidman- dreadful, Matthew Broderick stiff as a board. Only Glenn Close avoids embarrassing herself completely, which was amazing considering what she had to do.
I agree. This was the most ridiculous movie I've ever seen. It's a mockery of the original. I read the book in the 70s and couldn't put it down. The original movie followed the story line very well. I was all set to tape and when it started, I wasn't sure what I was seeing. I couldn't get through the first half-hour. What a letdown! I went to tcm.com and requested the original.

So agree.
I posted similar criticisms on another thread on this message board.
This is the worst 'remake' (I have a difficult time even using that term) from a quality story/of a quality original movie that I have ever seen.

Just because this movie isn't a horror movie like the original doesn't make it bad. It set out to be a comedy, not a horror movie. I thought the original was okay, but the remake was much more entertaining and energetic.
Why bother remaking this movie? Great friggin' question! I've always felt if you have something new to bring to a story, a different spin, or a decent re-imagining if you will, then go for it. But dont *beep* it up and bring shame upon yourself. Which is exactly what these boneheads did. They took a great story and choked all over it. The convoluted mess which resulted should never have been released. Blame the clowns who couldnt decide upon a major plot point ( are they synthetic or brainwashed humans)before they started shooting the thing. The original was nicely ominous and an interesting statement. The remake was a feeble attempt at comedic, something.

Remaking old films is fine, but they should have made this a horror film like the original. This film was totally different and I hated the ending. Its like a retcon to this entire film.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.
I do not think a remake was needed at all. The original is considered a cult classic and the last scene in the supermarket is just perfect.
But if you were going to make a remake why on earth would you take a horror movie and make it into a comedy. I went on the first day of the remakes release expecting to see a horror movie. It's the first movie I have been to that the audience booed at the end, including me.
I don't get all the hate for this movie. Sure it wasn't great but with all the overrated crap out there I can't believe only this got booed. The original, although I liked it, was your typical 70's hokey dork fest.

The guy who wrote the script said that someone told him the rights for this movie (the original) were available. Would you like to make a remake? Why not? And he started right away! So the problem starts when the rights become available to whoever has the money to do crap like this. There should be some rules limiting access to classic artworks ans they shouldn't be touched, but if May Britt accepted the role of Lola Lola for the BLUE ANGEL remake, what else can other movies expect? I am glad this people had a loss of more than 40 million dollars (did they actually had to build ALL THE HOUSES from scratch?) so this be a lesson to all who have money to burn making remakes and want to make more money and not lose it.
You didn't care about the original film. You thought it was OK. Let's see what happens when a filmmaker takes one of your favorite films. A movie that you really care about. And remake it into something completely different. That you cannot stand. Then tell me how you feel.
When i hear they were remaking The Stepford Wives. I was thilled about seeing it. It was such a great story. Until i found out that the movie they were remaking was just a satire. I wanted to see a serious horror film. Not some lame comedy. They really made a big mistake on this one.
