I'm confused

Were the "fixed" Stepford Wives robot copies or the original people who had been altered?

reply

Thanks to the lazy lazy writing of this movie, we don't know for sure. But here's my theory that allows me to watch the ending without wanting to bang my head against the wall:

Obviously, there's really strong indications that point to the SW's being robotic (the ATM wife, Sarah's remote, the robot Joanna on the table, etc). However, they also apparently still have their own brains, so what I think happens is that they transplant the women's brains into the robotic bodies (with the personality chips to make them all Stepfordy) and dispose of their human bodies.

If that's the case, then wouldn't you need a world class surgical team to detach the brains and inserting them into their robot bodies.

Apparently all that was required was the woman, a robot, and an Han Solo descend into the basement.

reply

So if that's the case, then at the end of the film everything isn't back to normal for the women? They're all cyborgs with robotic bodies? It would be pretty hard to transplant their brains back into their bodies with the two people who engineered the whole plan dead. Not to mention their bodies probably would've decomposed after a while...

reply

"Cyborgs in the 'burbs"

Not the worst idea for an ending.

They should've dropped the robot idea and stuck with the chips.
It's way more simpler and more elegant.
Maybe someday they'll remake the remake, and I'll still not pay to see it in the theaters.

reply

Well the original ending did indicate that once the women were returned to "normal" they were still in their robot bodies. The ending had Bette Midler's character malfunctioning, and part of it could be seen in the trailer if I remember right ("Goodbye...goodbye...goodbye.......see ya!")

it made more sence in the original film where the robots just replaced the wives, but they needed a happy ending in this version...but this was the best they could do? I do enjoy the remake, but theres a serious flaw in the whole 'robot body/womens brain' thing!

Wherever, whatever, have a nice day...

reply

I wouldn't say "lazy writing" as much as "studio interference." The studio & test audiences didn't like the idea that the men had killed their wives to replace them with robots so they re-shot some stuff that shows them turning back to normal, contradicting what we've already seen.

reply

well, what was it, because i am gong with awfully lazy writing. do you know if that is what it was, studio interference?

reply

You'd think if it was studio interferance to that degree, it should've been credited as an Alan Smithee film...

I was wondering the exact same thing as the original poster! Huge plot hole.

Such a terribly bad movie. Nothing can replace the original.

reply

this is just a campy movie..not meant to be logical. just sit back and enjoy, take it as it is :)

reply

I, too, was going to ask this same question. I don't understand how they are back to "normal" in robot bodies. The real women were then killed to my understanding. So confusing and so wrong.

You don't make friends with salad.

reply

The brains of the women had a chip added and were put into a robot body. They are all still robots in the end even after the chip is deactivated.

reply

I also understood it as the chips were put into the brain, and then the brain was put into a robot body. But, in the Larry King scene at the end, I assumed that Roger and Bobbi's brains were put back in their real bodies somehow.

reply

Bad writing, and the fact that the movie underwent numerous reshoots and rewrites following test screenings.

Reportedly, the original intention was indeed that the wives were robots, but then they hastily reshot the ending saying it was only chips in their brains, and leaving it unclear if they're in robot bodies or not. (Actually, putting brains in robot bodies undermines the story's point, but never mind...)

But in the end, it was just sloppy filmmaking, plain and simple. No deep meanings, no intentional camp, just plain shoddiness through and through.

Facts need to come before certainty.

Funny that I'm bumping this again, but it's probably a question everyone will have. I agree that the women are cyborgs with human brains. Makes sense-- Their bodies and skin were perfect now so they would never age, have the memories, can perform better, no murders involved, family wouldn't think they went missing. Would also explain how that one lady smashed that remote with her hands after the men try to control their wives. It's not a plothole...It was explained, but just in a weird way. Hah...I kinda get disappointed when I can't figure it out myself.

This just goes to show how coherent and logical story lines can be very important even in more fanciful movies. I was enjoying it until the last quarter when this discrepancy became more obvious. It became a real distraction for me wondering, "Are they going to explain this or...guess not". Bummer. Great cast.

Reg-Australia:

You posted that almost three years ago, but you need to know that they were absolutely robots with human brains. Who says at the end in the Larry King video that Roger and Bobbie were back in human bodies? They're just sitting there talking, not burning their hands with fire. ATM wife, breast enlargement wife, Bobbie burning her hand, Nicole Kidman's body double (robot) on the table, and of course all the wives breaking their remote controls with their bare hands can only mean they were robots.

Very strange, though. I'd much rather do the chips in their brains while still in human bodies rather than the brain transplantation into robot bodies. Who would want to have sex with a robot? Just because they would never get old and you can change the size of their funbags with a touch of a button? Oh, well...okay maybe I can see the appeal hahah.
