Sequel...mmmm, rumour has it...

I think that sequels, or at least episodic games, were in the mix.

For instance, after Michael, the firefighter, gives the essence to Roivas, he says "There's something I have to do before they get to me...", then he walks away.

No decent writer likes to leave loose ends like that, so my guess is that they planned on branching out, like "Eternal Darkness: Dark Paths of Edwards" or "Eternal Darkness: Inherit the Rats" (Max's story from underground to sanitarium).

There certainly are enough stories to allow for a few episodes. That, plus a rumour that SK are re-imaging EDSR for XBox 360.... hmmm, could mean good news for us horror fans.

There are so few good horror games anyway.
Eternal Darkness
They Hunger for Half-Life (Manke)
Silent Hill Series (especially 4)
Resident Evil (if you like that junk)
Clive Barker's The Undying (excellent atmosphere, plus a left handed gay hero! Rock!)
The Suffering (schizo story-wise, but insanely creepy atmos and creature design)
Blair Witch Series (demo only, too dull beyond that)
Quake (the first time you get ambushed by zombies rising from the water -- and then they rip out their flesh and throw it at you! Genre-busting that was!)

What other great horror games would you suggest?

reply

Phantasmagoria, although that one is really old. It was good though

reply

Oh yeah! Forgot about that one!

I have a copy of Sanitarium, but haven't been able to get it run.

reply

I had no idea the hero from Undying was gay. lol

The guy from Silicon Knights. Can't remember his name said in his own words "So much more has been written about this universe than was put into the game."

There's so many conspiracy theorists saying that the breakup between Silicon Knights and Nintendo is a fib, and that it's just a cover up.

I have to admit, they do have some convincing evidence.

reply

I have no hard facts to say that he is gay, but the series was written specifically for the game by Clive Barker, who is unabashedly gay and left handed. The hero of Undying is a British man who is left handed.

reply

Phantasmagoria... My god, that brings back memories. What was that other one? Beneath a Killing Moon or something like that.

I knew that Clive Barker was gay. And I know that the original character for Undying was going to be a baron or duke. But that he rewrote the charater so A- the audience would identify with him easier, and B- as a gay man, he would be attracted to.

reply

B - Right on!

Killing Moon. I played that on the mac, and...I think a port to x86. That was a tough one to get into, since the graphics were, like, so 1994. :)

I'm replaying Blood now. I am trying to play using a VCMS hack, but I should really just install a DOS VM and go that route ;)

reply

Oops, wasn't Killing Moon I was thinking of. The one I am thinking of is a FPS based on an island wiuth a mansion on it. The box art has a picture of a large zombie chef with a hatchet on it.

reply

DUDE! Sanitarium is an absolutely amazing game! google for how to run it on (insert operating system) and you should find it. I had problems on XP and googled it and found the instructions and it worked great!

reply

any chance Michael was going to kill himself to prevent any torture or unnatural acts they were going to do to him? I'd rather kill myself than have my head eaten ...but that's just me.

reply

I'd rather have my head eaten than kill myself...

anywho. Blood... that game disturbed me quite alot.

reply

I miss that game:( Is there any site where i can download it or something since its impossible to find in stores and EBAY is out of the options.

reply

reply

No horror list can be complete without Alone In The Dark!

Which shares Eternal Darkness's tie to H.P Lovecraft.

reply

Hey! Didn't I just leave your Aussie butt behind?

Man!

You know, I played Alone in the Dark, but I never could get the controls. But then again, I got into it AFTER Quake, so by then getting locked into controls was a hard thing to accept.

What about that game about ... um ... "Night Creatures"? I recall the demo taking place in a graveyard filled with lycanthropes.

reply

I played Alone in the Dark on the old Amiga. lol.

Night Creatures doesn't ring a bell.

In my opinion, Silent Hill is the crown jewel of horror games.

Despite the fact Eternal Darkness is my favourite game ever.

go figure.

**TOO ALL**

I forgot about this site: Home Of The Underdogs. Incredibly slow, but great genre collections. The best thing is that it allows full downloads of games that the distrubtors forgot about. Not everything is here, but it is still a great resource (just be patient). Here is their horror selection. And if you download a lost game, tip them please! They are doing the gaming community a great service by archiving unavailable games. Plus the site is run by people who aren't from Australia, a big plus!

This is fully legal as an archiving service of abandoned games.

*kaiden*
Here is Nightmare Creatures. Full game. 52MBs, but that'll take hours to download since HotU is run from a cheap server. The folks there just love games.

reply

Yeah. I know that site, I used to download games from them when my machine was still old enough to run them properly. lol. on my 56k modem.

Never seen Nightmare Creatures before. Sound good. looks abit like Heretic II.

reply

ohhhhh, I love you so much. This website is just my kinda thing. By the way it changed sites.

It is now http://www.the-underdogs.info/

It now became apparent (despite the lack of library paste) that something had happened to the vicar;

reply

RAWK! I thought they just went belly-up. Getting games nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnNOW!

reply

Awesome. I should go check them out. I loved visiting.

reply

I would buy Eternal Darkness for XBox 360 in an instant. Think of all the improvments that could be made on an already near-perfect game...

In other words, Steven Segal is too strong for you and you give up.

reply

Yeah... Wow.

Eternal Darkness will never see a game outside of a Nintendo console. If it did, it wouldn't be very good. Nintendo, not SK, owns the rights to the sanity meter and all related things.
Plus Denis Dyack himself has said that he doesn't particularly like making games for companies other than Nintendo.
I had heard that a sequel has been confirmed (when asked Dyack said "most definitely") and also that it would appear on the Wii.

The sequel would probably involve Mantorok and the highly hinted-at 5th Ancient.

reply

According to wiki, SK's contract ended in 2004, so know they'partnered with MS. SK's site verifies that Too Human is being developed for 360. So who know's, eh?

Hey, welcome back Zauis. There's no forum without you. :P

Yeah. I already read the blog. Exciting stuff.

reply

Baaaaah humbug to you and your Commander of the Royal Guard ways! The oddly named "Justonespoolturn" (I'd love to know what that means) brought some great info here. His/her info was outdated, but it was solid nonetheless compared to how we all just kinda joke around.

I've been unemployed for many many months, so I sold my cube and Eternal Darkness. I should check for an emulator, because any gamer's PC from the past three years should be able to play Gamecube games.

/me hopes to get the Configuration Analyst job he interviewed for today...

reply

Commander of the Royal Guard?

Where did you pick that up from?

reply

Meh, I wondered what General Kaiden was from, so I googled it and found a bunch a few boards where someone, likely you, talks about their character Kaiden who is a member of the Commander of the Royal Guard. So I thought "let's just mess with Kaiden's head" :).

I used to change my name for all the boards I frequent, just so people can't gather too much info about me! Since I took up Second Life though, I pretty much stay the same. I'm such a jerk in SL that it doesn't matter what others find out about me :) This zaius account is pretty old.

reply

Well, the name Kaiden popped into my head, so I named one of the characters in my novel General Kaiden.

I thought I made it up, then I found out it's actually a name.

reply

Yeah, that's what you mentioned on whatever BBS I found it on. I'm punching up a comic book story for a friend. Writing = fun.

Watching Ghostwatch right now. Lame, but really cool in context.

reply

ooh. Me and a friend of mine are working on a super hero comic, but we can't draw, and don't know anyone who can. I can give you a run down of it.

reply

Haunting ground and Clock tower for SNES i belive. Some hide n run horror games for you.

reply

Did you guys see the GT countdown: 10 scariest games?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7J_J4WhIxE

I was completely honoured by the fact that my favouritest game of all time (ED) made the list. I think it's a good list, but I don't remember the 1994 AVP being all that scary. I think they put that in there mainly for retro gamers. Personally I think that should have been replaced with Clive Barkers Undying.
