Envy is certainly a different kind of comedy. It really depends what kind of comedy you like, but for sure, this is only for certain people. It reminds me of SNL and Seinfeld. The jokes are quick and easily missed, and the characters' expressions are priceless. I though Walken and Jack Black were excellent, but Stiller (well I hate him in every movie).
I agree it isn't for everyone. I saw it with a couple friends and one didn't really like it and while I like it a lot the other friend thought it was okay.
As for Walken, he made me laugh once in the movie (You ever here of put your hands up? You just shoot him right in the back without any notice) but I have to stand up for Stiller. He made me laugh several times in the movie...
...after it came out on DVD I can remember all the parts now. The little person comment. The walking through quicksand to get flan. The don't taste my pants. The explanation on why he has to leave the cabin and who the guy is who wants him to leave. How he said his friend who owned the cabin was Jack Jack(something). The speech of how he is an archer and he shoots people in the back. Some of his long speech about how he is sorry for what he did. The credits.
You telling me you didn't laugh at any of that?
For Jack. He wasn't really funny in this movie. There were a few parts like at the end in the credits but in the movie he wasn't really given anything.
Envy isn't for anybody. Everybody involved with it's production should be put in jail, and everybody who saw it should get double their money back. I don't think I've ever seen a comedy which actually made me cry from it's sheer mediocreness. If you liked this movie, you're not human, you are in fact an alien, and I'm onto you. If you're thinking of seeing Envy, just go to a kids's cancer ward for an hour and a half instead. You'll get more chuckles there I promise.
I read all the posts on here and it seemed this movie was not going to impress me, which it didnt. Someone whos opinion I hold pretty low told me it was horrible so I decided to give it a chance. It didnt impress me however, it did entertain me in places. I thought alot of it was hilarious. I thought all of Jack Blacks wealth was a riot. The part when Ben Stiller is talking about how everyting Jack has makes him envious and his son "just plays the trashcan lid...although I think thats more about musical ability..but" That had me rolling.
You're right. It's not a movie for everyone. I loved the movie soooo much. And I will go out and get it. I loved the actors in the movie the most. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Christopher Walken, Rachel Weise (sp?), and Amy Peohler. Oh man. They all had me rolling. Whenever Ben went rambling on about his lines had me cracking up. Almost EVERYTHING that Jack Black said was a riot, "Buddy Boy! Let's go, Buddy Boy!" The fascination of his hand at the beginning of the movie. Christpher Walken's Valderi Valdera singing was hilarious. And most of his parts were. Rachel brought a down to earth quality for the movie but she was hilarious after she got sucked and tucked. Amy Peohler is always great to me, I became a fan of her after I saw Mean Girls, I thought she was funny as heck. She was running for something she didn't know the name of and everything. The fascination with flan was hilarious. I loved this movie.
Haha. Yah, that sure did hurt. It's been suggested though. I think I have good taste in movies. I loved this movie though, like the title says, this movie isn't for everybody, including you. But I won't insult you for your opinion. Cause... well... I'm not like you.
I just saw this movie last night and although it was funny at times (when Walken gets the arrow stuck in his back) it wasn't the best work by Stiller and Black. If you want to see the 2 at there best may I suggest " There's Something About Mary " and "Saving Silverman".
Perhaps I'm not giving a fair rating because I walked out of this movie after the first 45 minutes, but it was just that terrible. I was expecting Ben Stiller and Jack Black to just walk our in front of the movie and be say, "Hey we know this sucks, it was just a *beep* script, nothing we could do about it..." Recommending this movie to anyone is like telling them that IcyHot is jock cream.
For the record, I hated Envy. One could argue it's quirky, but that doesn't mask the fact it is bland and unfunny. Typical crap, especially since I love the genre Envy is trying to be: a black comedy.
As for jerk-face, if you hate the movie so much, why would the opinions of anyone who actually liked the movie make so much of a deal to you? I hate Envy, but that doesn't mean anyone who has a different opinion than you is immediately wrong.
