Why is Ben Stiller the hero?

Throughout the entire movie of Envy, Tim is constantly lying to everyone he encounters. In the movie Tim lies to Jack Black, the J man, his kids and his wife. When Jack Black comes running to the tent crying about Corky Tim (Stiller) says he has not seen Corky. When Stiller's wife comes home and meets the J man he calls him the pool guy??? During the vacation Stiller lies to his wife about Bosco and helping him in his car. Why didn't Stiller just come clean to everyone he met instead of lying?? My whole question is why is everyone always for Ben Stiller when he is a terrible person? Just watch the movie and see how many times he lies and has to have his way.
