Misunderstood Cult Classic?

This REALLY is nowhere near as bad as people say. In fact, I enjoyed it. It's different and has a unique style, and made me laugh more than once. It reminded me of a farce from the days of Shakespeare. I watched it after Orange County, which was terrible. This is far better than A Night At the Museum, Clerks, and dozens of other comedies that are considered great nowadays.

It's definitely not for everyone, but there seem to be a group of people that understand its humor, that aren't just saying they hate it because they've been influenced by all the negative hype.

Did you really just compare this movie to Shakespeare? Friggin kids and their damn MTV. Grow up!

What's the spanish for drunken bum?

reply

i wouldn't compare it to shakespeare, but it's kind of a cult movie in my cercle of friends

reply

I wouldn't compare it to Shakespeare, either, but it is deffinitely under-rated and its a really funny movie.

Go look up the definition of "cult classic". This is far from one.

Movies on IMDB are not overrated, you're just of the minority that doesn't bloody LIKE THEM!

reply

I would be careful with the phrase "cult classic".
I think the latest film that became a cult classic was "Pulp Fiction".
And this one is very far from both, cult classic and Shakespeare.
Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoyed it pretty much.
But just because my circle of friends knows it and happens to like it, that doesn't make it a cult classic.
So, careful with that phrase....

"Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make...."

It's not misunderstood or a cult classic
It is just really really bad and unfunny

One of the worst movies of this decade.

I really like this movie a lot for a few reasons. It takes place in this weird, disgusting desert-type world where freeways, power plants, and gross industrial-type places are everywhere. Christopher Walken is absolutely hysterical. Literally, 80% of all the lines he has I laugh at. It's not all about the stupid Va-POO-rize stuff, which is probably what turns a lot of people off because it makes it seem really low-brow, but it really is very funny, I think. Christopher Walken, again, I cannot emphasize even how funny he is in this.

jesus *beep* christ, anyone that says this is one of the worst movies of the decade really hasn't seen enough films to be making such a statement

"I think the latest film that became a cult classic was "Pulp Fiction"."

WTF? Pulp Fiction is one of the greats, but grossed $200M worldwide and was wildly popular at time of release, so can hardly be deemed "cult classic".

Now Reservoir Dogs (grossed under $3M at the US box office) or True Romance ($12M gross)? Cult classics!

reply

i agree. it is shaping up to be a cult classic. just like alot of other comedies that did awful at the box office - UHF, Office Space, etc.

i don't care what anyone says - it's a great movie. my friends and i are all film geeks of the "criterion collection" type - and we all love it!

seriously, i've shown this movie to dozens of people, and no one has disliked it yet.

I loved Envy, funny movie!!

It reminded me a bit of Neighbors (1981), which is a favorite of mine. It is very similar in tone, and the setting and plot even resemble it in some ways. That film seems to be largely forgotten about now, and was largely misunderstood and panned at the time, yet had a pretty hardcore "cult" following.

I love this movie, but I gotta say... the first time I watched it I was really 'eh' about the whole thing. For one, it was late and I was tired; and two - I didn't expect something w/ Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Christopher Walken to be be so subtle. I was expecting obnoxious/in your face comedy (which is why I put it on so late - something to enjoy while being 1/2 asleep).

It wasn't until I watched this when my ADD wasn't bothering me so muchm, and I was feeling a little weird that I just ... hell, I just loved it!
