What was wrong with the special effects?

I mostly figured Dark Wolf had a low budget and cut corners. Then I wondered why not use all practical effects instead of using the CGI that looked the way it did in this movie. The practical effects looked good. Almost as good as An American Werewolf in London.

The CGI part of the transformations near the end of Dark Wolf looked like computer test models or the basic CGI images before completing the CGI work. It was as though I was watching a featurette on the CGI process. Here are a couple of youtube links to Dark Wolf as a reminder of the scenes.

Interestingly enough the Dark Wolf DVD has featurette interviews of the director and actors. No interviews or no featurette about the CGI though.
