Can someone explain.

Just watching this movie again and although it is a good film one thing bugs me.

I understand that on the first occasion Tom Cruise is traded so he can then re-join the American Army, but at the end of the film when he rides against them he is then shown in an American uniform meeting the Japanese Emporer at the end.

Surely he would of been court marshalled or punished in another way.

Please some one put me out of my misery and explain how that is possible.

He wasn't in the army when he went to Japan. He was out of the army working for the Winchester Arms company for $25/week.

As roger said above, he'd left the army and wasn't on any official Army business. In effect he was a private consultant. He just wore his ceremonial uniform in to see the Emperor, because it was a solemn and very important occasion.
