WHY NO GLOVES?

When the Japanese Emporer meets Algren, Bagley the translator for the first time near the beginning of the film, everyone in the room is wearing white gloves, except for Algren (Cruise), who is bare handed. I was curious why this was done.

Gloves are big in Japan. Not sure if it's sanitary or strictly cultural, but lots of "official figures" have them. Cops, workers, some cab drivers, even the girls working the elevators in some of the nicer stores in Ginza.

I understand this. My point is, EVERYONE, including Col. Bagley and others, all wore white gloves. I agree with you. My point is that Tom Cruise is the ONLY person who never wore any gloves while in the Emporer's presence.

Not sure, maybe they just wanted to portray him as unrefined, rough around the edges.
