To me Tom Cruise gave his best preformance ever in this movie.true he has given several good ones in his time, but The Last Samurai preformance he gave was his best.He is so human and so emotional in the role.Defintly oscar worthy.Anyone else agree?

I completely agree! I'm actually not a Tom Cruise fan, but he was FANTASTIC in this movie! Almost makes me like him! :D

Same here! I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise but he did great in this film.

I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan either, but this is without a doubt his best film. This film should have earned more recognition than it did.

In most of his movie Tom Cruise has same facial expression and it's kinda irritating. but in last samurai he really show he can act.
I guess we could blame Edward Zwick for beating the talent into tom.

in most of his movies he does not have same expressions, did you only see mission impossible and jerry maguire ? Look up born on the fourth of july, rain man, color of money, risky business, legend, days of thunder, far and away, interview with the vampire, the firm, a few good men, magnolia, eyew wide shut, vanilla sky, collateral, valkyrie, tropic thunder, lions for lambs, jack reacher - this clearly shows how versatile he is,and in the last samurai his face was the same as his face in other films.Only difference was the beard and long hair.

Tom was considered one of the most talented actors of his generation long before he did last samurai,by both audiences and critics and film industry people alike.

Aside from myself, a lot of people I have talked to agree that while they are not necessarily "fans" of Tom Cruise, we all agree that he can deliver a powerful performance and definitely did so in The Last Samurai. I dont remember who was norminated that year, but was he even considered?

reply

You have voiced my own thoughts. I don't like him, either, but he was SO good in this movie that I had to admire his performance - he was amazing!

reply

This is one of my favourite Tom Cruise films. I agree, he should of got an Oscar. "What the hell am doing here!?"

"Do I look like I play board games?"

reply

He was nominated for a Golden Globe. Should have atleast nominated for an oscar.

reply

Yeah, this probably was one of his best performances. At least they recognized Watanabe's performance by nominating him for "best supporting actor".

reply

I agree, but I think Colatteral was better in his recent filmography.

reply

I agree on Collateral.

Tom Cruise is *beep* crazy; but that doesn't mean he's not good at what he does.

reply

I would agree.

reply

honestly i don't know why he hasn't been nominated a few times now. and i thought he deserved to win for born on the fourth of july.

reply

This movie melted me, I completely agree!

An offer you can't refuse.

This is Tom Cruise's best work as an actor. Totally agree.

Oscar worthy? I don't think so. Of the nominees for 2003 films, the only performance of the five nominated that might not be better than Cruise's work in "The Last Samurai" might be Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Sean Penn (the winner), Ben Kingsley, Jude Law and Bill Murray were all definitely better than Cruise (IMHO).

I'm a big fan of Tom Cruise (his acting, anyway) and I thought he did a great job with this film. Cruise tends to be quite stoic in his acting style, but even so it isn't easy to hold the quiet core of a story while others have more emotive roles and scenes around you. But I find Tom Cruise's scenes in particular with Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada absolutely rivetting.

Oscar-worthy? To be honest, I'm not sure -- but mostly because I'm really not sure what the phrase means any more. When Oscars get doled out for sentimental or affirmative action reasons, then they've drifted away from acknowledging the quality of a performance. I agree with other comments in this thread, that say his performance in Collateral was more worthy of note. He became an entirely different person for that one, without ever grinding the gears.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
