Could someone tell me

What did the letter say that the boy gave to Algren before he was sent back to japan?

It said 「侍」, or "samurai." I think it was Higen's way of telling Algren that he possessed the samurai spirit, or maybe giving him something that could serve as a reminder of the time he had spent with the samurai, or maybe it was something more personal, such as suggesting that he considered Algren as much a samurai as his own father was. Keep in mind, Higen became very close to Algren, as shown in the movie before the final battle.

Japanese calligraphy (or 「書道」, "shodō") also has a Zen component, but that's probably too unnecessarily complex... most Westerners wouldn't read that much into Higen's gift.

I have no enemies, but am intensely disliked by my friends.
