A Huge Rip Off of Dances With Wolves!
Is this not more or less the same story as dances with wolves? think about it.

shareI don't know about that. I would say that this and Avatar are more similar than this and D and W.
"The saddest thing in life is wasted talent." ~ A Bronx Tale (1993)
Both Last Samurai and Avatar borrowed the same plot element from Dances With Wolves, but at least The Last Samurai is still a great unique story. Avatar on the other hand was painful and over three hours long.
shareThe two films are almost identical in terms of storyline. In both movies you have a Civil War solider who :
- Becomes assimilated into a culture
- Develops a close relationship with a key figure
- Falls in love romantically with the widow of a fallen member
- Becomes friends eventually with the village hard ass
- Fights in a battle to help the culture.
The only real difference aside from the cultures would be that Algren is initially taken against his will where as Dunbar assimilates himself voluntarily.
In DWW was she the widow of a fallen member? I thought the one idiotic guy was trying to hook with her but she rejected him and then hooked up with DDL.

Sorry, but it doesn't even come close!
Last Samurai is factual events during Japans switch from Samurai Rule to Parliamentary Rule.
Dance with wolves is fiction.
But...I get your thinking about the shameful killing of True Americans during the westward expansion. These people were slaughtered like animals.
Here's one you might not know of? Just before President Lincoln's assassination...he had signed off on 42 death warrants against various territorial Indian Leaders so as to steal their lands? So much for "Honest Abe"?
And he also said "If I could end the war without abolishing slavery, I would."
...the more they stay the same.
You should probably watch Avatar, it's even more of a rip-off than this.
What clichés? Thats a word the wannabe critics use when they want to whinge.share
They are similar in aspects only this one is in Japan while the other was in the western times, the first movie about white man joining Indians was Broken Arrow in 1950 that starred James Stewart before Man Named Horse, Avatar, Dances with Wolves and they all share the same themes as included Last Samurai only with Japanese instead of Indians.

No. "Avatar" was. This was far, FAR less derivative.
What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
Yes, there are similarities between the two, except there wasn't as much of an emphasis on a love interest in The Last Samurai like there was in Dances With Wolves. There's nothing wrong with using a similar story, as long as it's done well and you care about the characters and story, which The Last Samurai did for me. Films like Tender Mercies and Crazy Heart both have similar stories, but they are done well. I think James Cameron ripped off Dances With Wolves a lot more than The Last Samurai did, and with the exception of the visual effects, Avatar isn't a very good movie. I blame that on the cliched script and overall fairly mediocre acting. That film, to me, is all style over substance.
