On the topic of prestigiousness

Now this film isn't the greatest of all time, but the acting, and cinematography is superb. The plot is far-fetched, but still has some emotion to it that most everyone can relate to and tugs at dainty heartstrings. I thought the film was excellent and should be watched without holding it to some historical high standards or super realism. It is a good movie to watch if you want to lose yourself in absentia.

Blah, Blah, white guy saves the day (or doesn't) cliche, but if you can look past that. the film is great. It can be a fantastic example of overcoming adversity and adapting to strange surroundings. Yeah it was obviously targeted to an American crowd, but certain things could be changed here and there to make it a fantastic film for all.

I mean, for just one moment, don't you want to suspend belief and feel alright for a minute or two?

I thought it was a wonderfully-made film that hit all the right notes. I don;t look for flawless history or accuracy in the films I watch. I don;t care unless it is so blatant that it takes me out of the world the director created. This film engaged me and took me in completely.
Two thumbs up.

Hmm, I don't see how people can view it this way:

Blah, Blah, white guy saves the day (or doesn't) cliche,

Algren gave advise to Katsumoto. That was all. He also gave the sword and message to the Meiji Emperor, but it was Katsumoto's actions that caused the Emperor to change. Algren was almost just a bystander who happened to help out a bit, but it was all Katsumoto IMHO.

Well the acting from Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe and the rest of the Samurai are great, but the Japanese emperor and Omura are terrible. They really lowered the rating for me. 8/10, 9/10 if it wasn't for the emperors acting.

It's just a great film with good performances, a good story and a great atmosphere about it. It does indeed hit all the right notes.

Highly enjoyable.
