He learned fluent Japanese?

That was fast, and he only spent one winter there? i loved the movie, but it was a litle unbelievable at times...
Japanese is one of the hardest languages to learn, i really don't think you can be fluent if you're not Japanese, or grew up there...

They had no TV or internet, so lots and lots of time on his hands. I can see him spending all those long days there learning enough of the language to get by.

It really is not hard to learn once you start communicating verbs and nouns.
