Why didn't Algren...

...behead Katsumoto after the final battle like Katsumoto beheaded General Hasegawa at the beginning? Thanx for any & all replies, comments, thoughts & opinions!!

I was wondering that myself. My only answer would be that Katsumoto needed the full distinguished honor of doing himself in- without the "charity" of a quick death that a beheading would bring. Algren did him the honor of allowing Katsumoto the full extent of his ritual suicide.

Simply because by that time he did not have the strength... and to a lesser extent because it was not his custom.

And speaking of Katsumoto's death scene, did it seem like Algren totally botched up that assisted suicide? Seemed like the sword went into Katsumoto's groin rather than his gut.
