So what now? (possible spoilers)

Does he marry Taka (just Japanese tradition get in the way of things like that), raise the two young boys as his own and live out his life in that village teaching and training up another young generation of Samurai?

I found it strange that Algren could do battle against Japan's army and then walk around freely, also, they went to such great lengths to get rid of Katsimoto (taking 2 armies against him and sending masked Ninjas to kill him) but then just let him walk around freely and visit the Emperor and come to counsel meetings and not kill him or arrest him (he actually was free until he wouldn't take off his swords).

Algren being able to go freely afterwards is a bit of a boggle, but as for Katsumoto and the Samurai being allowed to walk freely to the counsel meeting... the Emperor arranged and allowed it. The ninjas being sent to his house were Omura's doing, not the Emperor.

The Emperor did not have the beef with Katsumoto, Omura did.It was only he that was trying to kill the Samurai.

It was a good thing Algren returned to the village. After the big battle, all the samurai were wiped out. That pretty much left the village defenseless.

Algren probably shacked up with Taka, and assumed leadership of the village.

The movie implies that we saw the last of the samurai, so Algren training more in the same manner would kind of go against that.

Their romance was portrayed throughout the movie as subtle and will likely stay subtle. He will live in the house, help with the dailies, and help raise the children but out of respect for the kids and the late husband he will never marry Taka. He will help out around the village but won't train the next generation of samurai because he is not samurai. There is no more need for the samurai, they were the last clan and they fulfilled their mission. You can't stop progress but theres no need to rush it either. The village will continue on and over time will gradually modernize and just become another farming village in the countryside.

Omura may have been the acting commander but the Japanese captain was the ranking officer and the soldiers will listen only to him, hence why they listened to him instead of Omura and stopped firing the Gatlings. He likely gave Algren safe passage back.

Interesting thoughts but when the narrator at the end said that some believe that Algren died of his wounds and some say that he found his "peaceful place", it seems to me that the final scene where he walks back to the village and sees Taka and her sons might have been just what he was imagining in a dreamlike state, and not literally what happened. Sort of like at the end of "Gladiator" where Maximus sees his wife and kids in a vision as he is dying.

But Maximus' wife and kid were already dead, he was seeing them because he was dying too. The vision was symbolizing their reunion in the afterlife.

Eh, it's a movie. I figured there was a "code of honor" and temporary truce for that section of the film.

It does make one wonder, but it is Hollywood.

"Katsimoto"

It doesn't take even 1 second to correct the mistake, and yet you failed to do it.

There's no "tsi" in japanese language. There's 'chi' (ち、チ) and 'tsu' (つ、ツ), so how could a japanese name be "Katsimoto"?

(So at best, it would be 'Katsushimoto' (かつしもと), or 'Katashimoto'(かたしもと) or something, which would sound very weird)

Furthermore, in an age, where all the information is almost literally at your fingertips, WHY do people get movie quotes, character and actor names wrong?

How is it even possible to watch a whole movie and get a name wrong? Can't you check it, if you are unsure? And why would you be sure about a wrong name?

It boggles the mind.. I can't figure out WHY this keeps happening. It's SO EASY to check!
