"What happened to the last man at Thermopylae"

"Dead to the last man"

That part was so stupid. They were actually doing well by volleying the arrows at the Imperial army and they decide to stop and attack them in hand to hand combat?

Why not keep volleying arrows as long as it's effective THEN charge only when you have to?

"Why not keep volleying arrows"

Because they didn't have any arrows. The "samurai" were actually armed with rifles and artillery. This war was more about the struggle for political power than anything else.

The battle against essentially half the opposing forces having been won, left our depleted heroes with little chance of real victory (you see the enemy still had all their cannons and gatling guns and the other half of their men - whose loyalties were fairly compromised) so yes, the remaining conflict was a political one which achieved mixed but somewhat more optimistic results.
