Its been almost 5 years and I'm still pissed about the cancellation!

Not to mention that I'm still dying to see the 12 minute ending. This was such a great show and they didn't give it a proper ending. They just left us hangin...

Just think if the show had continued we'd be into the 70's by now!

Meg in college during the late 60's would've been a great storyline to see, not to mention the womens lib movement and all that killer music!

Judging by the amount of love us loyal fans still have for the show years later, makes you wonder what the hell NBC was thinking when they canceled it.

reply

Agreed! And I'm still pissed they haven't released the other two seasons on DVD. I really want to see that 12 minute ending, and heck season 2 and 3 because I don't remember much from those seasons!

This weekend I had a 1960's bug so I pulled out the first season DVD and am in the process of watching every episode. I'm up to the summer episodes so I know I only have a couple left. A few years ago I was fortunate enough to download torrents of season 2 & 3 and transfered them to discs before my computer died. I'm gonna watch every episode in order just for the hell of it. I know it sounds weird but I had trouble bringing myself to watch them because I knew the second I turned it on I would remember how much I loved the show and get just as pissed as I was when they canceled it. Thats exactly what happened but its so good I'm gonna keep watching all the way up until the last episode.

I still miss the show. It was canceled way too early. I think it could have lasted a couple of more seasons.

I know. I really want to watch Season 1 again, but I dont dare...because I havent seen S2 or S3 right through!

Australian TV stuffed up all the times, and you could never rely on it.

NBC - you suck!

Do you think we need therapy for some sort of ..... post traumatic stress disorder?!

I hear what everyone's saying here... I think it's a tragedy we lost this show when it was just entering the 1967 - 1969 era. Would've been fascinating to see the Pryors go through the Summer of Love, the intensity of 1968, and then 1969 with Woodstock & the Moon landing. And such musical acts as the Doors & Jefferson Airplane. I realize the ratings were low... and I am grateful the show went on for a third season when it probably could easily have been cancelled at the end of season 2. But even now, 5 years later, I'm still haunted by what could've been if these fine actors, writers, and producers had been given a few more years to create this story. This was magical, heartwarming, vital television, This was art. And it was a joy to behold while it lasted.

I miss this show. I wonder how it would have done today? Maybe it started too soon? There is a bunch of crap on tv today. This was the one show I watched with my parents, a show we always looked forward to watching.

By today I mean the emerging relationship with Meg and Sam. I don't watch a lot of tv shows now but I think interracial relationships are becoming common on some teen shows (new 90210 maybe?).

I miss the show too. It's unfortunate that it got canceled. I think they started making a lot of mistakes in season 3, though. Season 1 did pretty well. It seemed like they may have gotten too political around the 2004 election time, in addition to the character of Meg becoming a little bit unlikable and tough competition on other networks....but yeah, I miss it too.

reply

Why would the realistic depiction of social and political upheaval in the 60's have anything to do with the 2004 election. The only thing that was even remotely close was the Vietnam war and Meg's growing anti-war stance but it was always counteracted by the opposing view which was almost always in the form of an adult.

I love how people think Meg became unlikable when really she just started to become independent and find her own identity. I think there's people who prefer Meg as the innocent 15 year old dreaming to be on American Bandstand and then there's people who like her as that 15 year old but also appreciate her evolution into an 18 year old woman with the motivaton to make change. Her character was much more interesting once she started to worry about real things in the world.

Another overlooked aspect was how great Patty's character was becoming. For most of the series she was an annoying little know-it-all but towards the end she really started to grow. It would've been interesting to see how her character would've played out in the late 60's as well. Patty is intelligent and would be good at accepting things that may be considering out of the norm or taboo. Perfect for the sexual/political revolution of the late 60's early 70's.

I still hold a heavy, heavy grudge with NBC. I still don't watch anything on it.

Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered.

I agree - NBC doesn't offer anything anyway.

I'm right there with ya brown_sugar. I started hating NBC when they canceled AD and then the whole Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien fiasco was the nail in the coffin for me. I sure am glad though that Zucker pretty much got pushed out of his job. I remember seeing his name a lot when American Dreams was on the verge of cancelation.

AD made TV without pity's list of shows cancelled too soon (2nd one listed)

I love watching re-runs of the show any time but for some reason now that its getting colder where I live I want to bust out the S1 dvd again. This show was just amazing I still can't believe it was cancelled, we are coming up on 6 freaking years!

Imagine where the show could be now 6 years later if it would have lasted 6 more years. There was way too much potential!!!

The cold weather does that to me too! I loved curling up on a cold Sunday watching this show so that's the time I miss it most.

I know what you mean. I was watching seasons 2-3 lately, and I kept thing, "reality tv shows are still going on, and this beautiful show only lasted 3 seasons!" Made me so upset.
