Luke was a bad boyfriend.

To Meg. She went to his concerts of the performers he liked, listened to the music and was never allowed to say anything. Luke constantly made Meg feel bad about liking what she liked. Making her feel awful about wanting to have fun at the dance.

I agree 100%.

He had a sanctimonious, condescending attitude and I found it unrealistic that he went out with Meg at all.

What I never figured out is that Meg supposedly wasn't "serious" enough for his tastes... but he ends up with ROXANNE?!

I think it's because Roxanne was more of a "challenge" to Luke. She was more risky and outspoken whereas Meg was kind of a sweetheart and acted on the safe side. (Of course that changed in seasons 2 and 3).
