Yay, they're back...sorta!
It's good to see them back in their proper time, but the animation looks pretty stripped-down compared to the pre-FF days.

shareWe'll see what happens in the next episode. I think I would consider this new episode more of a finale to FF than a premiere to BTTS, hence the new theme at the end of the episode and the old theme at the beginning. It looks from the new opening that we might be seeing a more CGI/traditional type animation hybrid in these new episodes. I also noticed the new opening had Hun in it big time but no Karai or Bishop or any of the rest of the rouges still on the lose. I really hope they return in some form. Same goes for Leatherhead and the rest of there allies.
shareI think Leatherhead is going to make an appearence in the new season cause before the season started the finalized pics they had on ninjaturtles.com Leatherhead was shown along with Hun, April, and Casey besides the Turtles and Splinter.
shareYeah I just saw them. So far it looks like they're bringing everyone back except Bishop because I couldn't find an updated pic for him. Oh well they kind of gave him closure at the end of season 5 and FF. It would be fun to see him and the turtles interact after they saw what happens to him in the future.
shareJust saw the first episode of the new season, and I liked it. Very exciting, entertaining and dramatic. I can't wait to see what will happen next and what this new stake will be. It was awesome to see the shredders returning, and fighting with each other, always wondered what it would be to see the Utrom Shredder and Tengu Shredder fight.
My only complaints is that the animation style of the turtles. They look to simplistic and un-turtle-like in their looks. In the first five seasons, their shells were more marked, their muscles and body-forms were more shape-ful.
Also, I wonder why the Tengu Shredder suddenly became so weak. In season five, he was like a goddamn Demigod wich could destroy dozens of giant robots with a single blink. Here, he just shoots ordinary energy-beams from his hands. But maybe we find out the reason for this, maybe his weakening is the results of his defeat at the end of season five...
The (utrom) Shredder vs (demon) Shredder vs (cyber) Shredder was one intense battle.
Who was that other guy that said he slain the turtles (if I remember correctly)?
So let me get one other thing straight......... Viral is the Cyber Shredder?
I don't think we're actually _supposed_ to know who Dragon-Tattoo is (hence why the Turtles seemed so confused by his comment).
And yes, she is. Sorta. Or more accurately, he's probably her now.
I agree about the new animation style. Don't like it. I was only half-watching for the first few minutes -- it wasn't until I realized I could see Mikey's pupils that I started paying attention and then it was like, "Whoa! Who cut the budget?!"
It's very strange. The series started out with such high quality (for a weekly cartoon) animation. What the heck happened? Are they trying to appeal to younger kids?
At least they're back in their own time anyway. For now.
We've never been able to see the Turtles' pupils when they're wearing masks (at least not in the 2003+ series). It's a common animated/comic-book superhero thing because pupils will blend in too easily with a dark-colored mask. On the opposite extreme, you've got Superman: The Animated Series, where Supes pupils/irises are clearly visible at all times, but there are no whites around his eyes. Just a little curvy line up top and more flesh color.
In this case, it's more the bodies than anything else. They're more angular now, with less pronounced shading. It sorta reminds me of how things changed going from Batman: The Animated Series/The Batman & Robin Adventures to the followup series The New Batman Adventures, where they completely redesigned all of the characters to be easier to draw (and thus considerably easier to animate). Only in that case, it was a real problem with the original designs where they looked amazing on paper, but were a bit hit and miss when it came to animation, based on which animation studio actually worked on any given episode. In this case, the animation has never been a problem from day one, so they didn't need an overhaul to keep the quality up. It actually looks like they did a complete redesign back when they jumped to Fast Forward, and now they're bringing it back to polute the past.
If this is the real reason, it's capitalism at its WORST!!! American movie/TV-industry is getting worse and worse on this, and it seems like its no hope...
shareActually, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that it has to do with the Flash Forward smegup, and some foolish desire to make the show look "fresher" and more kid-friendly. The animation isn't noticably different, and the character designs are still sorta similar (much moreso than what happened between B:TAS and TNBA).
shareI still say they kept the Fast Forward look because they had not gotten back to their own time untill the end of the episode. If they keep it the same way in the next episode then yeah its here to stay, we'll just have to see.

If that was the case, I would think it would have worked a lot better if they'd switched back to the original look as soon as they dropped out into their own time, not just waiting until the next episode to make the switch.
shareAaaaand they changed the animation style. Again. Not the Fast Forward super-simple design, but not quite as clean as the original. For the first time since 2003, the Turtles have pupils and irises and all that, as grown turtles, while wearing masks. I know that the kid-turtles always had them, and I _think_ they showed up whenever a turtle was de-masked, but now they've got these _huge_ anime-eyes. It's obvious that it's a new "feature" because there are a lot of non-action scenes where they pointedly have the turtles look in different directions without moving their heads, but the irises are so freaking huge that you can only tell which way they're looking when they're in a close-up shot. Otherwise, they're just dark spots on the masks.
shareYeah I hope in the next few episodes they pick up on the action a little. The last episode, while entertaining, was lacking in much action.
