The most commonly repeated complaint about the new series of the Turtles I have heard is that it is too dark, violent and serious.
In that case I ask you: what does the 'N' in TMNT stand for?

I'm in love with both series however. The old toon is what I grew up on as a child, and it will always be with me, but when I started watching the new toon, I immediately fell in love with the turtles all over again, so in my eyes, they are equals.

I like to think that these Turtles is more story driven then the old show, kinda like how Beast Wars Transformers was story driven and it got dark around the end of Season 1 beginning of Season 2.

O i grew up watching the old series i still watch the videos i like the old series better but i do watch the new series with my little brother hes 6 but he likes the old version better to he also likes the movies aswell as the new TMNT.
shareI grew up with the old series too. And yes it was very fun until they tried to make it what it was not-a serious action cartoon. It was a fun saturday/syndicated action cartoon series like SuperFriends, Spider-Man and his amazing friends, The Incredible Hulk (1982), or any filmation DC toon. And yes the main purpose of it was to sell toys.
I like this new series better because it's true to the original but yet has some surprises that actually don't hurt the Turtles original roots. Plus they have numerous references to the original cartoon series that made the turtles a household name. Shredder being an evil Utrom for example was a reference to Krang. This is just a great more serious action cartoon that ranks up there with Spider-Man (1994) or Justice League.
If you like the old series a lot I suggest checking out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward.

Oh, I'm definitely a fan of the old series, no doubt, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the new one (or the comics either for that matter). I just appreciate them for the very different things they bring to the TMNT as a whole.
Did Karai exist in the 87 cartoon? I didn't see every episode.
It isn't the level of violence that bothers me, it's the lack of imagination that the original series had. The new one takes itself too seriously. I want to see a Ninja Turtles that combines the imaginative nature of the original with the action of the new one. I'd like to see the Ninja Turtles fighting the likes of Rocksteady & Bebop or Slash with a level of intensity to it.
God no! Bebop and Rocksteady were terrible characters.
I'm glad Peter Laird doesn't want to use them in future adaptions.
And if you want a more imaginative series, watch Fast Foward.
It's nowhere near as silly as the old tv series, but still isn't half as serious as the new one.
Although many dislike FF.
Personally, the new one got it just right.
Fast Forward is definitely not for me either. As for Bebop and Rocksteady, I wouldn't want them to be as incompetent as in the 80s series. I just think that a warthog and rhino make for great henchman concepts. Pure brute force to contrast with the Turtles' skill, much like Hun from the 2003 series.
shareI was a huge fan of the 80's toon when I was younger. As I grew up I grew away from the Turtles. Then when the new cartoon premiered in 2003 I was sucked right back in. Since then I've tried to go back and watch the 80s show, but I just can't. I don't think it holds up well. I just find it silly. I love the new show because it blends the darker and lighter elements well. It's still funny, but not in a cheesy slapstick way. And I'm not really a fan of Fast Forward. I think they had it right with the first five seasons.

shareI was a huge fan of the old toon when I was kid, I think I was about three when the show started. I mostly watched the earlier seasons, 1-4, and then lost interest for a while. I did start watching it again during the red sky episodes because I thought they looked interesting. That 3 parter where there were 2 sets of NT from different timelines and the series finale I thought was pretty good. Then the live action series came out which was horrible. Then when I found out there was going to be a new series I started re-exploring the old series. I collected all the DVDs and after watching the series with a more critical eye I'll admit the old series had many flaws but was still fun and the first few seasons I think are still classics. If you watch the original 5 episodes they play like a big epic animated movie almost on par with Transformers The Movie. Before all the fan boys go into seizers I did say ALMOST. The second and third seasons had a few clunkers but they were few and far between and they still played like a continuing story. After that a lot of episodes got a little silly but there were still some gems here and there. I think the OS's problem was they had one too many writers on staff and there must have been very little comunication going on. The new series first 5 seasons were awesome. If they had just stopped it there I wouldn't have been as sad, but then they had to bring in Fast Forward which was not flat out horrible but it was not near as good as the previous seasons. They should have just made FF a series on its own because of how different the tone was. I'm interested in seeing how BTTS turns out, we shall see how it turns out.

The red sky episodes were seasons 8-10 of the old toon. Season 8 (in my opinion) was almost as good as the first season. It was the last time Shredder and company were the main villians and gave them a lot moreto do, and the turtles took them out for good in the season finale.; it also held the final appearances from the Rat King, Casey Jones, and Bebop and Rocksteady. Seasons 9 and 10 dealt with a new villian named Dregg. I'll admit some of the episodes were bad, it you watch the bonus episodes on the season one dvd you'll know what
I mean. However, if you look at all the seasons there were always some duds, even in season 2 there were a couple. Still there were some above average ones. The three parter The Beginning of the End, The Power of Three, and A Turtle in Time was the best of S9-10. The turtles from S8 were brought in to help the current turtles and even Shredder and Krang were briefly brought back. I also thought the writers concluded the series in a very interesting way with using a lot of elements from thoughout the series in the final battle with Dregg. While the RS episodes weren't as fun as the earlier seasons, they were definately an interesting experiment that was both hit and miss.
With the new BTTS I'm on the fence right now. I'll watch them but I won't judge until I see the finished product.
I know this thread is old, but I'd like to say: I like both versions. They each have their charm. What one does differently is what makes it unique from the other. I have no problems with the changes at all.

Whats really good about this is that villains like the Shredder are really a force to be reckoned with this time and truly menacing, unlike the original cartoons where he was nothing more than a bumbling caricature. I like the way they r beefing up on these guys' strengths in the latest revivals of the 80's cartoons. Like how they beefed up Megatron and the Decepticons in Transformers Animated as well instead of having the standard plot for the week which fails always and a bunch of villains who always get whipped towards the last 5 mins of each episode.
